New twist on our draft?
Now seeing Smiths bad combine and Pro day, he just might drop to the
second round, where we happen to pick third. Do you guys, or gals, think
we could get Curry in the first round and pick up Andre Smith in the second round?
A lot of experts say Andre is still one of, or the best on game tape.
I say if he gets by the Raiders, this can happen.
What do you think?Last edited by BEER; -03-12-2009 at 07:42 PM.

Re: New twist on our draft?
If he actually had a "bad" Pro-Day then that might have been possible, but it wasn't...it just wasn't good enough to get him back to the status he was pre-combine.
Chargers or Redskins will take him...and if he magically falls past them the Lions, Eagles, and Steelers all could take him...and then the Lions again at pick 33
We would have to trade up to get him

Re: New twist on our draft?
Pass on Smith!! This player has some serious issues and I dont think they are going away. Lawance Phillips came out of college with lots of baggage and issues and he turned up to he a huge bust as a player.
Personally I think Smith is pretty much messed up with his personal life and needs to fix that before he can offer something to the NFL

Re: New twist on our draft?
He wasn't that bad....he talked to a freaking agent before the bowl game and got caught. Now what's happened after that I don't know but Nick Saban said he was a model athlete. Never got in trouble at all. He's engaged to be married, he's going to be a fantastic OT in the NFL for a long time, and whoever gets him will have a very talented OT. He didn't get busted for drugs, hitting a woman, cheating on a test, stealing clothes.....just talked to an agent like every other top ten selection potential did and he just happened to get caught.
He's 20 years old. He will mature.

Re: New twist on our draft?
I think you need to take a step back from the media's bashing of him and really look at it.
He is a coachable player, good human being, and obviously worked very hard to be the best offensive linemen in college last year. He had a minor problem with an agent, and panicked at his combine when he felt he wasn't in good enough shape to perform.
And it's not like he didn't work hard for his pro day like people are saying. Of course he was visibly overweight...he's ALWAYS overweight. He lost around 5-10 pounds and had a better 40 time than Michael Oher's combine time.

Re: New twist on our draft?
Finally a voice of reason. Thank you ISB. You are spot on. He's actually a good kid. I have alot of friends who are Bama grads and they rave about him. He run blocks like nobody else in this draft. Also, for those of you who say he's fat or out of shape, take a look at a former LT for the Rams named Orlando Pace. The last time that man didn't have a belly was when he was in his 16th week of gestation. OP always had some girth and he played well.

Re: New twist on our draft?
I would be really interested in hearing all of these "serious" issues rather than simple conjecture. I believe that your comparison to Phillips is completely unreasonable and unfounded. If you have additional evidence to provide, I would love to hear it, but until then I find that it is ridiculous to bash the young man like that.Steve
What you see is what you get, but what you see depends on where you stand.

Re: New twist on our draft?
No way A. Smith is as bad as Lawance Phillips . Lawance Phillips was a criminal and thug where A. Smith is not.
He's 20 years old and immature. He will mature.
I still think he could be a hall of fame Guard in the NFL. He could be a good OT.

Re: New twist on our draft?
Smith will not fall to the second round. There are too many teams in the middle to late part of this draft that will be happy to take him regardless of some possible maturity problems because he has the talent to be one of this class' best linemen.

Re: New twist on our draft?
I would love it if he did slip but I don't think the Rams front office has enough confidence to pass on a top level tackle in the first round to hope for a slip of smith. Rams fans, including myself, would be very upset if the Rams messed up and did not get a high quality tackle out of this rich tackle class.

Re: New twist on our draft?
I agree that Smith is nowhere close to Phillips character, I still would like for the team to get an OT by trading up in the draft.

Re: New twist on our draft?
Smith is an enormaous talent and certainly not a bad citizen, but there are definitely legitimate questions about his work ethic and dedication to football and he's been the first one to admit he has not been prepared or in shape. That said, there is no way he drops out of the first round.
