i should rephrase my question so you don't see us trading Pace or Barron? What if we see Long as a beastly LT and an upgrade over Pace at this stage of his career with his injury issues.

No, I don't see us trading either. One of our problems last season was that we didn't have a capable third tackle on the roster when Pace went down because of Steussie's injuries. Having that third guy who can step in if a starter should go down would be critical for us. So I don't see us trading that guy away and essentially creating another hole on the team, no.

Perhaps, though Barron's contract really isn't bad.

    Interesting tidbit from DraftDaddy....

Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long's interviews have been as impressive as his workouts so far. Look for him to get folks in slots 1 to 4 thinking a bit more....Most think the New York Giants victory will lead to a mad rush on defensive lineman early in the draft, but we hear the St. Louis Rams are very pleasantly surprised with what they have seen and what they've heard from Jake Long. The Kansas City Chiefs wont like that news.

Interesting love Jake Long, but I just think Chris should be our number 1 option

A note from Jim Thomas that seems to corroborate some of the DraftDaddy report...

The Rams came away impressed with Jake Long's workout Saturday at
the Combine. One team official said the offensive tackle from Michigan looks
like the complete package at that position.

Re: The Official 2008 NFL Combine Thread

    Nick,

I have a question that concerns both the Longs.

I too watched a bit of the combine yesterday and Jake Long was very impressive. Of course we haven't seen Chris yet so maybe my question is a bit premature?

First of all it's a guarantee that one of the Longs is going to be available at the #2 slot in the draft. But lets say for arguments sake they are both available when it's our turn to make our selection.

    Who do we pick?

The consenus is that Chris Long is the guy. However what's more important rushing the passer or protecting our own QB? Both of our lines have question marks. The O-line because of injuries and the D-line because of age.

Our RAMS since 1999 have been trademarked as an offensive team and our Headcoach is offensive minded. Having said that I honestly wonder what's going through the minds of our front office and Headcoach?

Linehan has also stated that at the #2 pick we need to take the best athlete available and ignore the team needs. I'm not so sure I'm believe that.

So to sum it up, who do we take if they're both available??

Re: The Official 2008 NFL Combine Thread

Its going to be a whole lot harder to find a top notch defensive end after the first round is complete then it is an offensive tackle. You take CLong and start thinking tackle in the second round. The only way you *don't* do that in my opinion is if you happen to think Jake Long is easily the better player or that Chris Long isn't worth the second pick. But if you have them in the same stratosphere, you pick the DE and never look back.

From all i have heard about this years prospects the FO seam to be more impressed with Jake Long than Chris Long. For all we know this could be a smokescreen and they are really in love with Dorsey, Chris Long or another top prospect

    Chris Long.

In other news, look for wide receivers James Hardy and Devin Thomas to break into the first round of my next draft projection. This is a receivers class where there's so much shake up it's hard to tell where anyone is going to go, but both of these guys I had as second rounders and have looked impressive at the combine. Hardy is a legit 6'5" receiver who ran an unofficial sub 4.5 today, what a combination. Thomas boasted one of the fastest times at 4.32 and measured in just a tad shy of 6'2".

Meanwhile, you've got guys like DeSean Jackson who ran well but could drop because of his size, and Mario Manningham who I had as a Top 25 guy just barely cracked underneath 4.6 and could slide as well. Eddie Royal is making a strong case to rise up boards and solidify a first day selection - measured in just a tad under 5'10" but put up a 4.43 w/ 24 reps on the bench and a 36" vertical. I think he's looked impressive catching the ball in drills as well.

Re: The Official 2008 NFL Combine Thread

Ohio State defensive end Vernon Gholston reportedly matched Jake Long's bench number with 37 reps today. At his size, that's an incredible number. I'd be asking for a urine sample right now - have a look at this guy.

The running backs are putting up some incredible numbers right now, all unofficial. McFadden with a 4.27. Jamaal Charles w/ 4.36, Chris Johnson a 4.29, Felix Jones 4.44, Rashard Mendenhall w/ a 4.43, Ray Rice and Steve Slaton both with a 4.44, 235-pound Jonathan Stewart puts up a 4.44 as well.

Gholston is probably on the juice, but you can say that about every player at the combine. Gholston is well known to be a bodybuilder. In fact, one of the knocks against him is that his first love is bodybuilding and he only plays football because he is such a phenomenal athlete.
