Mayock "stunned" McCoy managed just 23 reps
Posted by Michael David Smith on March 1, 2010 11:20 AM ET
NFL Network analyst Mike Mayock has been one of the biggest supporters of Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, ranking him ahead of Nebraska's Ndamukong Suh as the best player in the 2010 NFL draft.
But Mayock said he thinks McCoy's performance in the bench press at the scouting combine (23 repetitions of 225 pounds) is a red flag.
"When you start comparing numbers, which is what this combine is all about, in the weight room yesterday Suh did 32 and McCoy did 23," Mayock said Monday on NFL Network. "I was stunned that McCoy only did 23 reps. That tells me he hasn't been in the weight room the way he should have been over the last three years."
McCoy was tied for 35th among 50 defensive linemen who benched at this year's combine. Suh ranked sixth. The top defensive lineman, Jeff Owens of Georgia, got 44 reps of 225 pounds. The worst showing went to Antonio Coleman of Auburn, who managed 18 reps.

Re: The Official 2010 NFL Combine Thread
So McCoy does 23 reps on the bench while Suh does 32 reps.. I have a feeling Mayock is going to move Suh ahead of McCoy into the number 1 ranking for DTs now.

McClain sits out Combine drills
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 1, 2010 1:42 PM ET
Alabama inside linebacker Rolondo McClain was a surprise late scratch for all the drills at the NFL Scouting Combine Monday.
He's healthy, but has decided that working out wasn't in his best interests.
There are widely ranging opinions about McClain, who is projected to go anywhere from the twelfth overall pick to the Dolphins to the start of the second round. McClain may not fit well on a 4-3 defense. In fact, McClain said he'd be more comfortable as an inside linebacker in a 3-4 defense.
(Pittsburgh at No. 18 is one fit that makes a lot of sense.)
McClain wasn't the only inside linebacker to forgo running. Brandon Spikes of Florida was also expected to sit out the forty-yard dash.

Re: The Official 2010 NFL Combine Thread
According to Nebraska beat writer Sean Callahan, "Suh's 35.5 inch vertical was the highest posted by a defensive tackle at the NFL combine since 2000."

Re: The Official 2010 NFL Combine Thread
i dont think there was a drill where McCoy did better than Suh. Everyone questioned Suh's decision to do all the drills at the combine, but he definitely showed he had nothing to hide.
Weatherspoon put in a dominant showing after a very good Senior Bowl as well. He could be the best OLB in the draft, and it would be hard for the Rams to pass on such a talent if he was there when the Rams pick in the second (which i dont think he will be)

Re: The Official 2010 NFL Combine Thread
According to Mayock the only reason he had Mccoy rated higher tahn Suh was because of Mccoy's burst off the line. I personally think the only reason you didn't se that from Suh (who certainly showed today he's capable of it) was because of the gap resonsibilities he had at Nebraska. The defense Suh played in was much less focused on getting to the QB (yes he still manages 14.5 sacks).
On a side note, can we please stop this nonsense that Mccoy is better then Suh? Suh 99, Mccoy 97

Suh posts 35.5" vertical; best from DT since 2000

Some believe that Oklahoma defensive tackle Gerald McCoy deserves being rated over Ndamukong Suh due to his greater athleticism. If you are new to my blog, you might not know my opinion on this matter.
I believe Suh to be the unquestioned top talent in this draft. Whether he's ultimately drafted first or not will have zero bearing on my grade. I'm hardly basing my feeling on Suh on what he's done lately. I thought Suh should have won the Heisman and listed him as the top senior talent in the country back in July.
As evidence of Suh's athleticism, I point to the 35.5" vertical jump, NFL.com is reporting he posted today while at the Combine. Not only will Suh's ridiculous vertical jump almost surely lead all defensive tackles this year, it is one half inch lower than the highest vertical jump posted by any defensive tackle at the Combine since 2000 (Al Lucas, Troy).
The vertical jump is designed to test explosiveness -- supposedly an area in which Suh is lacking.

Re: The Official 2010 NFL Combine Thread
Am I the only one that can now visualize Suh leap frogging over the center and landing on the quaterback before he has control of the ball.

Re: The Official 2010 NFL Combine Thread
It amazes me that Suh can jump 35.5" at 307 pounds, with 33½ arms. Add that to his height and that would mean he could reach around 11' in the air. Thats extremly good for a guy thats built like a solid oak tree. I was a 100% sure I wanted Suh before the Rams season was over. There has recently been a lot of talk about Bradford and a lot of good points brought up about why we should take Bradford. Several of those points made me reconsider for an instance about me being a 100% convinced we should take Suh but in the end Suh is my choice.
