Patriots Plan to Replace Wes Welker With Danny Amendola

Patriots Plan to Replace Wes Welker With Danny Amendola, According to Report

    by John Beattie

The Patriots chose not to franchise Wes Welker (or anyone, for that matter) on Monday, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a plan at slot receiver if Welker is not a Patriot next season. According to Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com, the Pats have a replacement in mind in Danny Amendola. Florio, who was a guest on The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday morning, hinted that the Pats plan to sign Amendola next week. “[The Patriots] need to work something out by next Tuesday,” Florio said. “The problem is they couldn’t franchise [Welker] because it would cost them $11.4 million to keep him around. “The ace in the hole for the Patriots is Danny Amendola.” Amendola caught 63 passes for 666 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games in an injury-shortened 2012. “He’s the slot receiver from the Rams, several years younger [than Welker], and he’s had plenty of injuries, but he’s one of the toughest players in the NFL,” Florio explained. “It could be that the Patriots already have plans — and tampering’s not supposed to be happening. but every team is doing it. But they may already have an understanding that on the first day of free agency, they’re going to ink Danny Amendola to replace Wes Welker, which would make a lot of sense if that’s what they do. “The Rams couldn’t justify putting the franchise tag on Amendola because, for a slot receiver, to pay him $10 million, you just can’t justify paying him that much money, but it’s an important position to take care of. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Amendola is a Patriot next Tuesday.”

    Per rotoworld:

" A source tells CSN New England that the Patriots are closing in on a multi-year contract with free agent Wes Welker. The source says the "two sides have come to the understanding that they are far better with one another than without." It's a logical resolution considering the state of the Patriots' receiving corps, Tom Brady's dependence on Welker and the slot machine's questionable fit outside of New England's scheme. Although no national outlets are confirming the report yet, we wouldn't be surprised to see a three-year deal announced prior to next week's free-agency window. It would have been extremely difficult for the Pats to replace Welker's average of 112.0 catches per season over the last six years."

Re: Patriots Plan to Replace Wes Welker With Danny Amendola

According to both the Boston Herald and ESPN's Adam Schefter, Wes Welker has no plans to re-sign with the Patriots before testing the market next week.
A Tuesday report from CSN New England stated that the two sides were "closing in" on a deal. That may have been premature. Although Welker wants to finish his career in New England and the Patriots want him back, we're less three days from the negotiating window for free agents. The Herald says not to be surprised if Welker is fielding offers this weekend. Still, the scheme-dependent 31-year-old could very well find a softer market than expected and end up settling for a team-friendly deal with the Pats. Beat writer Mike Reiss would consider it a "surprise" if Welker does not end up with a long-term deal from New England.

So, according to inside sources, the Patriots either will or will not sign Wes Welker and/or Danny Amendola.

Re: Patriots Plan to Replace Wes Welker With Danny Amendola

The Patriots this week, didn't not consider potentially signing Danny Amendola to replace Wes Welker, who hadn't yet not signed a deal to remain with the Patriots himself, under the condition of course, that the Patriots refuse to not not sign Danny Amendola, who is rumored to have an arrangement in place with the Patriots to not refuse a free agent deal.

I think the title of the article is misleading for sure. And I think everyone figured the Patriots would make a play for Amendola if they lost Welker. That said, they've played hardball with Welker, they aren't going to turn around and give Amendola a swimming pool full of cash.

So they plan to replace Welker (who has been very healthy in the past) with Amedola (who is hurt, a lot) yeah that should work out well...

Of course with my luck Amedola could set a new iron man record with the Pats...

As they have similar skillsets, they would probably rely on the fact that Amendola would thrive under the system the same as Welker did. Also, Brady is an elite QB, and seems to rarely put his receivers in a position to get hurt. Of course, if they believe he'll work because he's a system player, they won't pay him as much. I gather that is the problem between Welker and the pats, they believe his numbers are a product of the system.
