PFT: Over-under for Austin could be pick 15

Over-under for Austin could be pick 15
Posted by Mike Florio on March 30, 2013, 12:02 PM EDT

Itís fitting that West Virginia receiver Tavon Austin and former West Virginia defensive end Bruce Irvin have been going back and forth regarding whether Austin will be drafted higher than Irvin was a year ago.

For Austin, some perceive his over-under spot in round one to be pick 15. Which is the place at which the Seahawks picked Irvin in 2012.

Austin, weíre told, has been invited to the attend the draft. He has yet to decide whether to accept, possibly because thereís a chance heíll slide. After all, some are troubled by Austinís size.

Still, his quickness and elusiveness and unexpected straight-line speed have made him one of the potential impact players in the 2013 draft. Besides, didnít we learn after Russell Wilsonís performance in 2012 that size truly doesnít matter?

The Saints currently hold the 15th spot in the draft. While they are unlikely to pick Austin (then again, Drew Brees surely would love to have him), that would be the spot into which anyone picking after 15 would likely have to trade, because Austinís floor very well could be the impact-player-challenged Rams at No. 16.

Well, from all that I've been hearing, there is a posibility at 14 with Carolina. And also that SF might be willing to trade up ahead of the Rams.

I imagine that it also depends on where Patterson goes. I could be wrong but I still think Patterson will be the first WR off the board. If Patterson falls to the mid-teens, the presumable Austin would fall too.

    That's a very good point.

On the other hand, many thought Michael Crabtree would be the first WR off the board in 2009, but Heyward-Bay snuck in before before him. I wouldn't be totally shocked if Austin went first, depending on the type of player teams need and how they feel about Patterson's upside.

The comparison to Wilson is just silly. Does Wilson's success also mean teams should consider 270 lb. OTs?

As for Austin... if some other team is willing to take him with a top 15 pick (or trade up to do so), so be it. I would oppose spending additional picks to trade up to ger

That's very true Nick. If I had to pick right now I'd take the Over-15. I think there's a lot of hype right now, but the draft is far enough away that it will calm down a little.

Though with the Raiders picking in the top 5 I might be way off

As well as Allen's workout next week. If he shows up healthy and impressive it could affect Austin's draft spot.

Based on how the smaller, playmaker types have been valued in this year's F/A market....there is little to no chance he falls beyond 15.

    I wouldn't go that far. 50/50, I'd say.

    Wow, hard choice.

If Davis was still in charge of the Raiders, it would be an obvioius under, lol.

I'm going to say over. Barely over.
