PFW on Rams Drafting Barron

Barron bolsters the Rams' O-line

Torry Holt is right. Marc Bulger will almost definitely enjoy a few
cold ones this evening.

The Rams quarterback will be raising his glass to celebrate the
first-round selection of Florida State OT Alex Barron as good a pick as the
Rams could have expected after watching two other guys many suspected
they were specifically targeting (Oklahoma ORT Jammal Brown and Georgia
S-OLB Thomas Davis) fall off the board.

In PFW's final mock draft, we had Brown tabbed at the Rams No. 19
spot. The rumblings were that St. Louis preferred Brown over the other two
top-rated tackles, Barron and Washington's Khalif Barnes, because he
had a nasty streak and more of a physical presence.

But the Rams' need for O-line help is glaring, especially at right
tackle, where Kyle Turley almost certainly won't be back, and both Barron
and Barnes figured to be excellent alternatives to Brown (we actually
had Barron going three picks ahead of the Rams in our final mock at the
16th spot).

Barron is a big body, an Orlando Pace clone, in fact, who at 6-7 1/2,
320, should fill the bill nicely at right tackle if properly motivated.
As Holt indicated on ESPN, he will have an excellent mentor in Pace,
who it turns out will be going through a full training camp for the first
time in two seasons with a long-term contract in hand.

In a St. Louis Post-Dispatch poll, the overwhelming cry was for an
offensive tackle (more than 70 percent). Barron was the best OT available.

This was a good pick. A safe pick. The best pick the
sometimes-unpredictable Mike Martz could have made.

My only concern is can he pick up the offense quickly and not look lost out there. :mask:

Yea, I'd say he understands the offense well enough.

The only problem I can see bulger having is will he be able to see over the OT's
