Projected Cap Hit of 1st Round Draft Choice

Does anyone know the projected Cap hit of the first round draft choice. I know the Rams saved $8M in cutting Pace, but part of that will be taken up by whomever is drafted. So if the Rams draft an OT in the 1st round, I'm assuming a 5-6 year deal with $30-35 guaranteed, so a cap hit of around $6-$7M so the ultimate savings for that position is only $1M or so.

The NFL desparately needs a rookie cap system. No way rookies should be able to sign contracts like this. I know everyone has said this before, but how is it never addressed by the NFLPA?

It's been reported that it will take about $6 million to sign our 7 picks.
Jake long got five years and thirty million, so it should be in that range.
But it's not $6 million against the cap in year one.

Even for rookies taken with the first few picks, the first year cap hit will be minimized by reducing the first year salary to minimum and spreading bonus money out.

Matt Ryan signed a $72 million deal last year but his first year cap hit was under $3 million. So was Chris Long's for his $48 million deal.

Good contract people will find ways to try and reduce that first year hit as much as possible, because they know they have a limited amount of space to work with due to the rookie cap (not a wage scale but a certain established maximum cap amount for all rookies in the first year of their contract).

So is there technically a rookie cap already in place? If so, why don't they just lower it?

There is a rookie cap in terms of how much each team is allowed to spend against the 2009 cap when signing their rookies. So whenever the Rams draft their seven players, the 2009 cap cost for all seven players will have to be under a specific number.

There is NOT a rookie cap in terms of a wage scale that determines how much total money a rookie can make when signed. Until a wage scale exists, rookies picked in the first few picks will continue to make ridiculous contract money on the total value of their contract.
