Rams heading to Texas A&M to work out Matthews, Evans, and yes, Manziel

Trio of high-profile Texas A&M prospects to work out for Rams

Texas A&M has three players who could go in the top 10, and the St. Louis Rams will have a group of officials in College Station, Texas, on Friday to work out the trio.

NFL Media insiders Albert Breer and Ian Rapoport report that the Rams -- who have the No. 2 and No. 13 picks in the first round -- will work out A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel, wide receiver Mike Evans and offensive tackle Jake Matthews. First, though, the Rams' group will be in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Thursday to work out Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron before they head west.

The Rams' contingent will include general manager Les Snead and coach Jeff Fisher.

St. Louis reportedly is entertaining trading the No. 2 pick, but if the Rams keep the second selection, they have a chance to shape the first round.

The Rams already have Sam Bradford at quarterback, but the front office might figure Bradford is not the long-term answer. Taking Manziel would be proof of that being the case.

Matthews would improve the offensive line, while taking Evans would mean the Rams could pair him with Tavon Austin, last year's first-round pick, to give their quarterback -- whether it's Bradford, Manziel or even McCarron -- two potentially potent weapons on the outside.

Manziel and Matthews would be legitimate No. 2 picks; neither seems likely to be available at No. 13. Taking Evans at No. 2 would be a reach, though, and he also seems unlikely to be there when the Rams pick at No. 13. If the Rams do trade the No. 2 pick, Evans could be their choice -- depending on the trading partner and what pick the Rams acquire.

McCarron is seen by most as a second-round selection; the Rams pick 12th in that round (44th overall). McCarron, though, says he has been told he could go anywhere from 16th to 35th.

Despite the effort to create a story, this is no big deal. Of course the Rams will work out Manziel while they are there. No different from working out Taj Boyd when they worked out Sammy Watkins. If they didn't work out Manziel, they'd be showing their hand. Bradford need not worry.

I agree with Avenger. THey're heading to Texas to look at Matthews and Evans. While they're there, they would be silly not to add Manziel, who else would toss Evans the ball?

You think Mike Evan's would want his QB throwing to him. Much like when Manziel had his pro day he wanted his receivers to throw too.

The Rams also would be fools not to take a look at Manziel, when it comes to trade value they need to know what they are trading away to get the maximum value.

The Rams may have to show some interest to create a trade up from the Jags or Browns.

Exactly. Looking at Manziel does not make a statement. Going to Texas A&M and saying, "no, we don't want to work out Manziel" would make a huge statement.

Rams may be leaking workouts again, but which one(s) are they hiding?
Posted by Mike Florio on April 30, 2014

The draft is approaching. Which means that teams are conducting eleventh-hour workouts with prospects.

Which means that the Rams possibly have commenced the annual process of leaking to the media the names of players they’ll be working out. The last two years, they opted to slip the information to the public via Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. This year, a broader cut of reporters have been sharing details on Wednesday about the team’s final itinerary before the draft arrives.

The challenge is to ignore the names likely leaked by the team and to wonder who else will be getting a workout. Two years ago, the Rams concealed their workouts of receivers A.J. Jenkins and Brian Quick by leaking details of workouts with Justin Blackmon, Michael Floyd, and Kendall Wright. (The good news? The ***** took Jenkins before the Rams could get him in round two. The bad news? They got Quick.)

Last year, word got out (without a leak from St. Louis) of the team’s visit to Morgantown to work out receiver Tavon Austin. But the Rams managed to keep quiet their workout of teammate Stedman Bailey, who was drafted in round three.

This year, reports are linking the Rams to the Big Three from Texas A&M (Jake Matthews, Johnny Manziel, and Mike Evans) and Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron. Also, Jason Cole reports that key decision makers are traveling via private jet for offensive lineman workouts at Notre Dame, Michigan, “OSU” (we assume Ohio State), and Tennessee.

If the team has leaked those, the real question is whether there are other names out there we don’t know about.

Then again, maybe the Rams have gone next level this year, leaking the names of the guys in which they are actually interested.

So basically we still don’t know what the Rams or anyone else will do. Thankfully, it’s only eight days until we find out.

The Rams are hoping that a few of the national media pundits will bite on the Manziel, to the Rams at two!

I agree with all the posts here. I can only say, Les Snead is quite the poker player when it comes to the NFL Draft. There's a bit more to this trip, but the smoke screen is pretty clear, though it must be to all other GM's as well. It's just that tiny shred of doubt that makes it a gamble.

    Go Rams!

I think its just a smokescreen. You know they are going to work out Matthews no matter what, might as well throw Manziel and Evans (1st round picks) in there!

Those workout destinations certainly make sense:

Notre Dame: Zack Martin, Chris Watt
    Tennessee: JaWuan James, Antonio Richardson
Ohio State: Jack Mewhort, Corey Linsley
    Michigan: Taylor Lewan, Michael Schofield

    Well, duh.

Of course we have to work out little Johnny. How else are we going to see Evans catch passes at TX A&M?

Sam Bradford - QB - Rams

ESPN's Chris Mortensen said on SportsCenter that Sam Bradford "would likely go on the trade market" if the Rams drafted a quarterback in the first round.
The Rams have shown interest in quarterbacks -- they're working out Johnny Manziel on Friday, for instance -- although they aren't commonly sent QBs in mock drafts. We'd consider them a sleeper team to draft a quarterback at No. 13 overall, but ultimately see St. Louis as much more likely to select one on day two. Bradford has a whopping $14.015 million base salary, an obvious obstacle if the Rams tried to trade him. He is also coming off a torn ACL.

Fisher and Les are saying perfect, a sucker has taken the bait.

Re: Rams heading to Texas A&M to work out Matthews, Evans, and yes, Manziel

The idea that the Rams would take a QB and then put Sam on the trade market makes no sense. After the draft, what would they trade him for? A 2015 pick?

If the Rams wanted to move Sam and draft a QB, they'd be shopping him now. They're not, and this is a non-story.
