-Strengths: Excellent size and speed...Great athlete who would make an impact at any big school...Has fluid hips...Physical and aggressive...Has some upside.

-Weaknesses: Played against a low level of competition...Raw and has a lot to learn in terms of technique...Awareness leaves a lot to be desired...It will be a major jump in terms of the talent level and will need to show well at the postseason All-Star games.

-Notes: Began his career at Central Michigan before transferring...Has everything the NFL is looking for physically and is one of the top sleepers in the draft.

From nfl.com's Gil Brandt, he's played safety also and may be a better safety than corner in the nfl. Has the size to play safety.

I think he's a bit of a reach in the second round, but he looks like a solid player that could play at multiple positions in the secondary. Plus, he seems like a physical player. Earlier than I would have taken him, but not a bad pick, I don't think.

Scouts info Ronald Bartell (CB, Howard)

Shows the natural ability to turn and run versus faster receiver. Is smooth for a taller DC. Has the potential to match up on the perimeter in the NFL. Has very good leaping ability to defend against the fade route. Also is an aggressive player that will fill hard versus the run.

Weaknesses: Is raw and unpolished. His footwork is poor. He does not show good balance or leverage in his backpedal and he is too inconsistent in terms of opening his hips up too early. He really has gotten away with relying on his natural skills at his level. Does not show great recognition skills or awareness. Loses the ball in the air too often. Will get caught peeking at times and doesn't show a consistent ability to read quarterbacks' eyes. Also will get caught jumping routes too early. Is aggressive versus the run but plays out of control at times and will miss too many arm tackles.

Overall: Bartell transferred from Central Michigan to Howard in 2003. He started all 11 games as a junior in '03 and finished with 47 total tackles, one INT and six PBU. He started all 11 games again as a senior in 2004, finishing with 34 total tackles, one INT and 13 PBU. Bartell is a height/weight/speed prospect with great NFL measurables. He has terrific upside because of his size and speed, and he has very good natural athleticism. He also has great size and is willing in run support. However, he has a lot of room to improve before he's NFL-ready. His footwork, overall technique, recognition skills and awareness are marginal and he also proved at the Senior Bowl that he is going to need a lot of time and coaching before he's ready to even contribute on defense in the NFL. We still think a team could take a chance on him somewhere early on Day 2 because of his rare "measurables", but Bartell Jr. is too unproven and unpolished to risk a first-day selection on.

Why every year do we pass on good solid players and reach on guys we could have drafted in the 3rd or 4th round. Even if he does go back to safety it's another project for the Rams. I didnt like this pick at all, considering there are still better corners and natural safties out there we could have taken.

Interesting selection indeed. I will be anticipating what the word from Rams Park is on this guy.

Did Armey and Co. find another diamond in the rough, like Hargrove from last years draft?

Before all of us "experts" criticize this pick, just because some guys are better known and have more media hype, doesnt make them better.

What did we all say when charlie took travis fisher and Pisa. reaches right? two pretty good picks. No guarantees on any of these guys. I trust in our front office team, we dont know what they do, no matter how much we think we know. This has all the signs of a charley special.

    OVERVIEW
    Ronald Bartell Position:
    Cornerback
    College:
    Howard
    Height: 6-1 Weight: 208 Hometown:
    Detroit, Mich.

Bartell is an extremely talented and versatile defender. He began his college career at Central Michigan, where he started as a free safety, strong safety and boundary cornerback. He transferred to Howard in 2003, where he manned the boundary cornerback slot for the last two years.

Bartell earned two letters in football, basketball and track at Detroit Renaissance High School. He was an all-city, all-metro and City Defensive Back of the Year selection as a senior. He caught 23 passes for 385 yards and four scores as a receiver and had 45 tackles with four interceptions as a defensive back in 1999. In track, he ran the 100- and the 200-meter dashes, earning all-city and all-state accolades.

He redshirted in 2000 at Central Michigan, performing on the scout team as a free safety. Bartell played in every game in 2001, seeing action at both safety positions while starting five games at the strongside position. He collected 68 tackles (39 solos) with an 11-yard sack, a fumble recovery and seven pass deflections.

Bartell shifted to free safety in 2002, recording another 68 tackles (46 solos) with a sack, three stops for losses, three forced fumbles and six pass break-ups. In 23 games at Central Michigan, Bartell totaled 136 tackles (85 solos), two sacks, four stops behind the line of scrimmage, four forced fumbles and 13 pass deflections.

He transferred to Howard University in 2003, shifting to boundary cornerback. Bartell posted 51 tackles (43 solos) with two stops for losses, a fumble recovery, an interception and six pass break-ups. He spent the 2004 offseason interning with the District of Columbia Juvenile Probation system. Bartell then spent the 2004 season "policing" the secondary for the Bison.

Bartell prevented receivers from catching any passes in six games during his senior year. He finished with 39 tackles (29 solos), an interception, 14 pass deflections and a fumble recovery, as opposing offenses began to stay away from his territory most of the year.

In 22 games with the Bison, Bartell registered 90 tackles (72 solos) with two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and 20 pass break-ups. In his four years of college ball, he came up with 226 tackles (157 solos), two sacks for minus-18 yards and seven stops for losses of 25 yards. He recovered three fumbles and caused four others. Bartell also deflected 33 passes and intercepted two others while starting 38 of 45 games.

    ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a well-defined upper body with broad shoulders, thick chest, long arms, good bubble and large hands Confident athlete who loves to dare the quarterback to throw to his side Shows quick feet and the ability to recover quickly when beaten Does a very good job retaining plays and bringing them from the board to the field Seems very alert to the plays developing around him Generates a sudden burst on the ball once he is able to locate it Closes quickly and covers ground with his acceleration Showed marked improvement timing his leaps and going up for the ball (increased passes defensed total from six in 2003 to 14 in 2004) His quick feet and superb speed allow him to stay on the hip of the receivers through the routes and he has that shut-down mentality, evident by the fact he did not allow a reception in six games during the 2004 season Shows loose hips in his backpedal Breaks on the ball quickly and recognizes routes in zone coverage Demonstrates explosion through his burst Equally effective in press, man or Cover-2 alignments Has the ability to flip his hips and run in transition Does a good job of planting and coming back for the ball Uses a tight shadow technique in man coverage and can read the quarterback to make plays on the ball Adequate wrap-up tackler who is more effective working in space.

    AGILITY TESTS

    4.37 in the 40-yard dash 345-pound bench press 32-inch arm length 10-inch hands Right-handed.

    HIGH SCHOOL

Good point, GC. My only qualm isn't about whether or not Bartell has talent, but whether or not we could have taken another player and gotten Bartell later.

There were quotes from Armey about a "sleeper" at FS. I wonder if Bartell is who he meant. His size and speed are ideal for a FS.

He may be a reach in the sense that few teams had him rated that high, but I think its a pick with some real potential.

One thing about the draft, you never know when a guy is going to get plucked out from under you, regardless of where the "experts" project he will go. We didnt wait on this kid, we picked with 4 and a half minutes left on our clock. This was clearly the kid we wanted at a spot we needed, so why should we second guess? Could we have gotten him later? Maybe, maybe not. As for me, i like the idea of us taking the guy we thought was the best available guy at a spot we needed.

    ramming speed to all
