Rams Work Out Colt McCoy
From the PD:
Rams work out Colt McCoy
By Reid Laymance
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
GM Billy Devaney just finished their private workout in Austin with Texas quarterback Colt McCoy.
Devaney told Post-Dispatch correspondent Austin Laymance that McCoy showed “all the stuff that you look for in a great quarterback.”
Devaney did not want to make any comparisons between McCoy and Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford, considered by most to be the No. 1 QB in the draft and the favorite for the Rams to use the No. 1 overall pick on in two weeks.
“He was extremely impressive,” Devaney said. “He made all the throws and his arm strength was good enough.”
The knock on McCoy in some scouting services has been his arm strength. McCoy also suffered a shoulder injury in the BCS title game and hadn’t thrown publicly until last week.
The Rams did not attend the Texas pro day last week when McCoy performed for representatives of 30 teams, including head coaches Pete Carroll of Seattle, Mike McCarthy of Green Bay and Eric Mangini of Cleveland.
The difference in today’s workout was the Rams gave McCoy plays and routes to run, rather than his doing his own routine.
The Rams contingent, including quarterback coach Dick Curl, also spent time talking with McCoy about audibles, making reads, moving players around and getting them in position. In some of the drills, one receiver would be “covered” and he would have to throw to a second.
McCoy is projected anywhere from a low first-round to second round choice. He had been seen as an option for the Rams if the team decided to go defense with its first pick (Nebraska’s Ndamukong Suh?) or trade down for more picks.
After the hour-long workout, the Rams left to fly to South Bend, Ind., where they will watch Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen’s pro day.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: Rams Work Out Colt McCoy
Arm strength was "good enough" hmm. Well I like his mobility and that he has played at a high level for 4 years, but I would'nt like the waiting till round 2, someone could really make us pay to move up if we had too, knowing that we would still need a QB.

Whether or not McCoy's workout was that impressive, that's exactly what you'd expect Devaney to say.

Yeah... though it would be refreshing and entertaining if, after tomorrow's workout, Devaney said something like "Geez, this Clausen guy throws like my little sister! And what an arrogant jerk! I can't believe anyone would take him with even a seventh round pick! Total bust material!"

Re: Rams Work Out Colt McCoy
The fact that he said "Good enough" kinda puts me under the impression that it was lacking to Devaney. Most workouts tend to get overblown when official interviews or quotes are being taken, same as with players...
"I think the world of Kyle Boller.."
"He is a great football player"

Re: Rams Work Out Colt McCoy
perhaps the reference of "good enough" was about the pundits who said he didn't have NFL arm strength. As in his arm strength is "good enough" for the nfl. Who knows...

Re: Rams Work Out Colt McCoy
Honest question:
Is arm strength really a concern when we run an offense that is reluctant to throw past the first down marker?

Well Peoria since your obviously exaggerating ill just say this (btw we threw some deep passes quite a few times this past season..), If its a 10 yard pass you want that zip on the ball for the reasons already stated. Again you overstate/sarcastify (a word?) something to make it seem like a bigger deal than it really is.

Re: Rams Work Out Colt McCoy
Only if reports following Bradford's private workout next week include equally unvarnished observations like:
Devaney: He'll need to speed up that 2 minute drill. Making Jason Brown kneel & pray with him after every time Sam sticks his hands between Jason's cheeks to take a snap won't get it done at the next level.
Dick Curl: Been doing this for 120 years. Never had a QB bring his own sundial so we could measure how much time he has in the pocket. But whatever he's used to, I guess. Took some nice hits as well although I think that redheaded cheerleader would've been penalized 15 yds for groping the passer.
The med staff: Sam was terrific. Didn't cry or nothing when we put him in the MRI machine. Obviously this is a case of practice makes perfect. Plus his roll-onto-the-stretcher and on-crutches 3 cone drill times were outstanding. It all speaks to his extensive preparation for his future.
