Report: Cardinals expected to franchise tag Karlos Dansby
According to Kent Somers, who covers the Cardinals for the Arizona Republic. From Feb. 7 to Feb. 21, teams can use their franchise and transition tags on players. The Cardinals are expected to franchise inside linebacker Karlos Dansby, and it's important to remember there are two levels of franchise designations.
The first is the exclusive rights designation. That prevents other teams from making offers, but it also guarantees Dansby the average of the top five highest paid linebackers in the league based on 2008 numbers. That could approach $8 million or so.
The other option is the non-exclusive designation. Other teams can make offers to Dansby, but the Cardinals would receive two first-round picks if they decided not to match. The upside for the team is that Dansby's franchise tender would be less, about $7.2million, because it's based on five highest salaries in 2007.
The transition tag allows the club to match an offer a player might receive from another team. If it declines and lets the player go, it receives no compensation in return. The player receives a guaranteed salary equal to the average of the top 10 highest paid players at his position.

Doesn't mean he's not the best player on their defense, if they're not spending it on someone else, why not keep the leader there.
