Report: Pats close to signing tight end Fells
Fells is reportedly close to signing a deal with the Patriots. They like his versatility. I guess we'll see...

I wonder who we have in mind to replace him. The move to not retain him surprises me...it's not like he was demanding a huge contract coming into RFA.

Re: Report: Pats close to signing tight end Fells
Perhaps he wanted starter money and Spags dont see him as starter material..he has a considerable amount of potential..but in the whole the majority of that has been witnessed just on the practice field...Pats are infamous for recording other teams practices so they possibly have had their eye on him since prior to our game in Foxborough in `08.
also the Pats get success with players that have some flaws to their game by using schemes that are less likely to expose those flaws.
Spags wants players that are more complete than that i think. he certainly seems to with defensive players anyway.
i would prefer us to have kept Fells but only as our number 2 TE..he has potential but i never thought of him as a number 1 TE and i doubt if the Pats do either...its pretty obvious that Spags& Co didn`t.

Re: Report: Pats close to signing tight end Fells
I would have to agree on both accounts. First, it is entirely possible Fells wanted starter money, and he might grow into being a good starter. But we need somebody with a higher ceiling. Maybe we sign a new TE maybe we take Graham in the draft. But I dont think Fells was the answer for this team right now.
Second, the Patriots do have a knack for plugging players in to specific scheme's that they are meant to excel in. It seems no one knows how they do it. The most famous example is their passing scheme that they have, take Tom Brady not a really exceptionally gifted QB but he is in a scheme that allows him to succeed on a constant basis. Cassel gets plugged in and does well, gets shipped to the Cheifs and struggles. If I give Belicheat anything, its that he knows how to maximize the players he brings in. The Patriots might get something out of Fells we didnt, but remember, that doesnt necessarily mean we could have got the same thing out of him. It's just what the Patriots do.

Rotoworld is reporting that the Rams are making a big push to sign Fells and that he is leaning towards us.
Take it for what it is worth.

Rams back in the picture with Fells
By Jim Thomas
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The St. Louis Rams have made a strong push Tuesday to retain free-agent tight end Daniel Fells, although New England remains in the picture. Fells could make up his mind as early as Wednesday, according to league sources. Those familiar with the negotiations say Fells, in fact, may now be leaning toward the Rams because of his time spent with the program and familiarity with the coaches.
At the moment, Billy Bajema is the only other tight end with appreciable NFL experience on the St. Louis roster following the release over the weekend of Derek Fine. So Fells could have a real opportunity to compete for the starting job in St. Louis in 2010

Re: Report: Pats close to signing tight end Fells
according to the boston herald..the Pats are getting Alge Crumpler in for a visit but i believe they have two TE roster spots to fill after the departure of Benjamin Watson & Chris Baker.

Re: Report: Pats close to signing tight end Fells
I like Fells, but he seems to be fit for the H-back role like Cooley plays in Washington.
Kevin Faulk may not be brought back, and Watson will be gone so there is a needs in NE.
