Roman Harper to Be Cut. Could Rams Have interest?

I have said before the Rams need a veteran presence inn their secondary, especially at safety, but lack the cap to sign a top FS like Byrd.

With Roman Haerper about to be cut, here is a guy that would bring the type attitude needed against Seattle and SF and Az, and in the playoffs.

Gregg Williams knows him well, and no doubt loves his physical, on the edge play.

He is 32 in December, but used right, and at the right price, he could be a guy WIlliams and Fisher may really target to add what they need in toughness and attitude.

He is much like Courtland Finnegan in attitude, but bigger.

If the Rams draft a FS early to start, a guy like Harper could be a perfect fit here, and he may love the idea of going to a defense he thrived in.

Plus the Rams have had great success with guys named Roman, on BOTH sides of the ball, eh?

Harper is a SS coming off a season in which he appeared in only 9 games (5 starts).

I'm wouldn't spend more than minimal FA dollars on a player like that.

In a similar context of older veteran presence for our secondary I have read that Bernard Pollard who's a FA from the Titans might be on GW's radar screen. Similar to Harper he played in GW's system and is likely available for the veteran's minimum relative to our cap situation. The only cautionary note is that he hits with reckless abandon and gets flagged quite a bit. Sounds like our kinda guy.

    Go Rams!

I'd happily add Roman Harper. He's a physical player and plays like a linebacker. He knows Williams' scheme and has been a productive in the box SS for many years.

    Absolutely!

Enough fuel in his tank for one, two more seasons, is acquainted with GW, sign him at the right price!

    Roman Harper

    Born: 12/11/1982 Prattville , AL
    NFL experience: 9th season
    College: Alabama

Saints release ... Roman Harper ...

    By Kevin Patra / [Excerpts]

Sean Payton told us last week there were cuts coming for the New Orleans Saints. On Wednesday, the team gave us the first three names.

The team announced it terminated the contracts of cornerback Jabari Greer, safety Roman Harper and linebacker/defensive end Will Smith.

"I have coached and been around a lot of great players and I put these four guys right there at the top," Payton said in the team release. "Jabari, Roman, Will and Jonathan all represent and epitomize what we look for in our players. These are disciplined, smart, tough and team-oriented individuals. They all played an important role in helping this team and this city win its first Super Bowl and they have all enjoyed multiple playoff appearances and wins."

Harper and Vilma helped key the Saints' Super Bowl championship four seasons ago. However, both veterans have seen their play fall off precipitously the past two seasons.

As we discussed on the "Around The League Podcast," most cuts this time of year come in the form of well-paid veterans on the wrong side of their NFL careers.

The Saints were projected to be more than $13 million above the estimated salary cap for 2014. The moves cut more than $16 million from the Saints' cap.

There still might be more cuts and restructures coming from New Orleans with holes to fill and a big contract for tight end Jimmy Graham on the horizon.

Wouldn't mind having Harper on the team, but it might be a bit awkward for him having to see all the replays of when Sam ran him down from behind a couple year's back

If he was better than TJ McDonald than sure. But since he isn't, no thanks.

I like it for a depth move. Would be nice to have a Vet that you can plug in from time to time.

If anything and as stated for the right price Harper would be a good addition to our defense. He is familiar with GW's system and that could help educate those that aren't. Not to mention we could use a big hitter on the back end.

Anyone know any Tennesse guys the Rams might look at snagging that GW would like to have in his D?

I would take Bernard Pollard over Roman Harper. But if he costs a lot then go with Vet Minimum for Harper to add some depth.

    EDIT:

If the Titans don't resign him, most definitely Bernard Pollard

Alterraun Verner CB- Referred to as ATV by the fan base, Alterraun Verner is a clearly a fan favorite for many of the Titans faithful. After almost being demoted or asked to switch positions, Verner rebounded by having an All-Pro caliber season. Verner has already said that he will at least test free agency to gauge interest from other teams, and he should, he has earned that after playing on a fourth round contract early in his career.

ATV is the type of corner that every franchise (outside of Seattle) dreams of, he is smart, physical, instinctive on the field, and courteous off the field. Look for him to seek top-five CB money in free agency

As a vet minimum for depth sure. Otherwise not worth the money.

Alterraun Verner (CB) or even Michael Griffin (FS) if he gets cut. He was drafted by Fisher.

As I posted earlier in this thread, get ready for lots of penalty flags with Pollard.

    Go Rams!
