One way or the other, if Gholston keeps getting dinner bought for him he's going to have to shed some pounds before training camp. Two dinners in one night? At his size? Wow, no wonder season tickets go up every year.

Same thing happened to Fridge Perry. He was a cornerback at Clemson.

Clady would be tempting there, but ultimately I'm not completely sold on his value or the value of a CB at pick six. Sedrick Ellis makes the most sense at that spot, but I'm not thrilled by that pick either.

So the situation is that the Jets give us their second rounder and third rounder in '09 to swap with them in round one, and both Longs, Gholston, Matt Ryan, and Glenn Dorsey are off the board. What would I do?

I guess I would select Sedrick Ellis with the first round pick to plug him in at nose tackle. In round two for the Rams I'd go best DE on the board (Jackson or Campbell probably) and then with the Jets' pick I'd go best receiver (Caldwell, maybe Manningham). In the third round I'd come back and take an offensive lineman (Mike Pollak gets consideration should he somehow be there, as would Nicks, Greco, Cousins, Benedict).

I'd be more willing to take his word on it if Lande wasn't the only one reporting it. If there really was a problem with the testing unit, I would think the plethora of draft sites out there as well as NFL.com would be on this as well. But as I've seen, Sporting News is the only one talking about this. So I'm not sure whose word to take at this point. Perhaps it's a moot point, as Gholston's combine number was still the highest among defensive ends anyways.

Maybe I'm making too much of this, but if Gholston went from a 35 1/2 inch jump at the combine to a 42 at his Pro Day, it makes me wonder what he's been doing. Every site I have checked, including NFL.com has his Pro Day vertical at 42. Just sayin'........

If he took steroids it wouldn't increase his vertical 6 1/2 INCHES IN ONE MONTH.... If it did i would be taking them right now.

If Gholston can make those types of leaps in performance without doing anything funny, I'd seriously consider taking him at #2, even if both Longs were still available.

The most recent six inch increase over that short a period of time came from Elliot Spitzer at a cost of $4500. I dont know about you guys, but my wife has informed me that she is raising her rates.

when I read that I thought the same thing, lets be careful here and the Rams need to do there homework on this guy.

Chances are the measurement was off, but the fact that only one guy is reporting it makes me wonder. That said, I think suggesting that Gholston may have improved his performance in medicinal ways is VERY premature and pretty unsupported at this junction.

FWIW, Purdue tight end Dustin Keller improved on his combine vertical of 38" at his pro day, jumping 41". According to Lande's numbers, Gholston improved by about the same amount. Even if it's not as impressive as 42", it's still an improvement on a number that already led prospects at his position.

Very true. I'm not convicting him, but it does make me wonder when a dramatic improvement like that happens. I'm just sayin' that if the Rams are indeed considering taking him with the #2 pick, they need to do their homework as jk noted and be as sure as possible that there won't be problems in the future.

But that should be the case regardless of who they select.
By the way, all of this Gholston talk kind of reinforces what I said last week - that Gholston is more of an elite athlete and as a consequence may have more upside potential than Chris Long, even though Long is an excellent athlete in his own right and probably the safer pick. So, knowing what we know at this point, I'd be happy with either one of these guys. As much as I like Jake Long, I really, really hope we go DE with our first pick.

FWIW, NFLN is reporting there was a problem with the reach measurement at the Combine. The error reduced every prospects vertical by a few inches.

If that is the case, it would explain the increase we're seeing in everyone's vertical at their pro days.
