Should Rams Look at Sproles If the Price is Right?

His kickoff return numbers were down 5 yards last year, but he caught 71 passes and ran the ball 53 times. Perhaps a lighter load at age 31 could make him a real value for the Rams.

Maybe they can get a draft pick for Pead, who clearly won't get a good shot here as the starter, and is not a good KR.

Just saying, the cap is abailable for some veterans minimum guys, and I'd hate to see Seattle or t he Niners or Cardinals get him.

I think you have to at least put your foot in the water Saturday, see what Sproles in thinking, what he wants this year.

I bet Gregg Williams, who knows Sproles from his Saints days, would be for bringing him in to help the young RB, and be a perfect third down back and compliment to Stacy.
I think having a solid veteran in each unit on this team could really help.

They have it on the O-line, D line at QB, TE, LB, but that's about it.

They have a huge need at safety, CB, WR, RB for a veteran presence.

I can see their free agency reflect that need that Les Snead and Fisher both have spoken of several times.

These are smart guys, who get what they feel the team needs, and really have some urgency this year.

SO that's why they probably will add veterans at those positions.

I would love to see Hakeem Nicks in a Rams uniform, if he wants a short term deal at a good price for the risk.

A guy like Roman Harper as well, who knows the Rams defense and Gregg Williams.

Even a Charles Woodson, who could be like a player/coach.

There are lot of plus 30 guys out there who can still play, who want to win another ring and help a young team learn how to do that.

The next two weeks are really going to be telling, and i think the Rams are gonna be real players, and will surprise the fans by who they add.

Since plans to mimic the Saints offense were scrapped early last season, I see no reason to consider Sproles at this point.

He would be the best pass-catching safety valve Sam has ever had. Definitely worth looking into.

I'd love a Sproles clone in the 4th or 5th rounds that will make a fraction of what it would take for Sproles to be signed. Too bad Richardson had such a down year, with his speed I'd love to see them use him like Sproles.

Edit: Richardson or Pead for that matter.

Sure, but the price won't be right. He'll go to a contender anyway.

No, because Austin should be running any pass catching backfield play that we would design for Sproles.....

And the Rams are not "a contender"

Oh that's right ONLY teams that won big last year will do it again.

If the Rams are not a "contender" then sur ely the Bears aren't either. I mean, what have THEY won lately?

Plus t hey are an AGING team, not a youngest in t he NFL one like the Rams.

I HOPE teams underestimate St Louis this year.

And Sproles will go where he will play most, and where he wil get PAID the most.

That "go to a contender" stuff is pretty much been proven as nonsense with Pro players.

How many plays was Austin a RB?

    Now even the same player.

And as I said Sproles is great KICKOFF returner, Austin is not .

Also, Austin doesn't provide VETERAN leadership in the RB room like Sproles would.

There are good reasons I guess for letting ANOTHER team snap up guys like Sproles, but the ones I am seeing here are NOT them.

You HOPE to hit on a fifth round back? How often does THAT work?

The Rams missed on a SECOND rounder, in Pead.

    This league isn't about "hoping".

I'd pass on sproles I'd rather spend money elsewhere. We don't need a kick returner especially one who has lost a step. Keep building through the draft and adding players who make sense through free agency without over spending.

Just what we need a kick returner when almost every kick goes 8 yards deep. The value of a kick returner has gone way down. For every Pead there is a Zac Stacy or Terell Davis. Just because a guy is picked high in a draft means nothing its a crap shoot. Hoping to hit on a 5th rounder is being realistic in my opinion. You can research the hell out of someone and still end up with Lawrence Phillips. Sproles is not a need in my opinion Tavon Austin at the end of last year was filling the swing pass role and turning those in to huge plays.

Re: Should Rams Look at Sproles If the Price is Right?

Darren Sproles has been one of my favorite non-Ram players since back when he played for the Chargers. The guy was just flat out exciting to watch. The other remarkable thing about him given his diminutive stature, is his ability to pick up and block blitzers. I canít pretend to know how much gas Sproles has left in his tank, but I do know he will be 31 in June. As a rule in general, running backs tend to decline after 30 years of age.

If Darren were given the chance to play for the Rams, I am sure he could still contribute. On the flip side, the Rams are a young team striving to build for the future. If Sproles were to become a Ram, he would be taking away valuable reps from younger players.

I would think Williams is more likely trying to convince Snead/Fish to draft Clowney, than recruit Sproles. Gregg Williams is a defensive guy, and while his defenses had to compete in practice against Darren, Gregg was hired to run our defense, and as such, I doubt heíd have a huge influence on which offensive players the Rams should bring in during FA.

    Lastly:

I agree. However, I donít see the Rams (at this juncture) as being a team willing to pony up big bucks for an aging running back. Remember Barry, I am talking about one of my favorite players to watch, but in the end, the NFL is a business. I would think Williams is more likely trying to convince Snead/Fish to draft Clowney ..

As a fan, I would love to watch Darren in horns, but IMO the Rams brain trust will look to spend their FA money on other positions.

Out of curiosity, what is your opinion Barry as to "the right price"?

I've always been a big Sproles fan. I think that he could help as a number three back.

Exactly, why get Sproles when we already got Austin who could do all the same kind of things

Because Austin is primarily a slot receiver and Sproles is a HB. Granted, Sproles is old and might be too expensive, but it wouldn't hurt to take a look.
