Should the Rams use the Franchise tag on Brandon Lloyd?

This was brought up over at TurfShowTimes so i figured i'd see what the Clan's view on this would be.

Using the tag would cost us $9.4 million.

Right now we have approximately $10 million in cap space( based on the assumption that everyone under contract returns at their current amount). Of course after cuts, restructured contracts and other factors that number will change.

I for one would hate if we use the franchise tag on him. It would really hurt us in the ability to sign some key FA's. I would love for him to stay and get a 3-4 year contract(5-6 million a year). But if were going to give up that kind of money even for one year, id rather get Vincent Jackson.

Also Lloyd might be really unhappy if we franchise him and block him from his chance of going to the Patriots or getting a long term contract(probably last of his career). We don't know if he'll let it be known hes unhappy or not(on the field and off) if we do it, he doesnt seem the diva type but you never know what someones gonna do when it comes to there nfl career. If we Franchise him we might only keep him for one more year and draft someone younger next year as well. Many possibilities here.

I really like Lloyd, especially how he could teach Blackmon(if we draft him) a lot more in terms of Route running and catching then any other receiver on the market come FA. In my eyes he is the ideal mentor to a young wr just entering the league. IMO Lloyd is the best Route runner and has the best hands of the wr's hitting FA.

Now you might be asking- you think he has the best hands and route running but would pay more for someone else? Yes thats correct. VJax is a tall wr who has some great body control and can out jump the secondary and is 4 years younger then Lloyd!! Lloyd was unlucky that he finally emerged as a legitimate wr threat so late in his career. Im sure he's looking for that last big contract instead of a franchise tag and uncertainty the following year.

But enough about what i think, i want to know the Clan's view on this.

This is based off if we can't work a long term deal of course.

Franchise tag or no Franchise tag?

Hell no, screw him if he wants big $. He's too old for a big payday and we can sign a younger WR like Manningham for that kind of money with a longer term deal.

    Go Rams!

Yeah no way, with that $$ we could go out and sign Colston or someone similar.

I just don't think so. I would love to see us sign him to a 2 or 3 year deal. This way he would be a more positive player to help teach Blackmon if we draft him. Not sure he would be a positive influence if we tag him and he dosen't want to be here.

Too many free agent WR this year the money could be used to sign one of them. I would keep Lloyd if he would be willing to stay and not break the bank. If not best of luck see ya later

    Go Rams

Nope, but depending on our situation on the team as a whole, I'm sure he'll be alright with being paid reasonably.

No cap room = no franchise tag. Them's the breaks. If we can sign him long term, fine. Or if we can franchise him and trade him, sure. But we need to bring in a WR at $4M cap, not $9M.
    I believe!

Re: Should the Rams use the Franchise tag on Brandon Lloyd?

" A team source tells NFL Network's Jason La Canfora that the Rams will not use the franchise tag before the March 5 deadline.Free agent Brandon Lloyd told PFT Live Monday that he would be open to receiving St. Louis' franchise tag, but La Canfora says it's not happening. The Rams would then enter the heart of the offseason in need of two wide receivers. The Patriots are expected to be in the mix for Lloyd. The Rams also want to retain him, but it's pretty clear they aren't willing to break the bank. "

Re: Should the Rams use the Franchise tag on Brandon Lloyd?

I voted Yes, but just now realized franchise tag does count against salary cap. For some reason I thought it didn't count against salary cap. So I thought to myself why not, atleast we will have a WR for sure and we can still get Colston and Blackmon. But if it counts against cap, that completely changes my mind, hell nah.. Colston and Blackmon bandwagon till I DIE! or till the offseason ends.....

Btw don't ask me why I thought franchise tag counts against salary cap haha, misinformation was told. So for now we are still unanimus

I like Lloyd but at this point in his career he is not worth that kind of bread.

    Sorry, but no...
