'Skins Watch - RGIII benched, Cousins to start against Atlanta

The soap opera continues in DC, and the much heralded RGIII has lost his starting gig (for the time being). This no doubt has much to do with the ongoing struggles between Shanahan and owner Dan Snyder. But it makes sense from a football POV as well - RGIII appears to be regressing, is causing sacks with ill considered runs out of the pocket, and seems to have lost the team. If Cousins flops, no harm done to a team already in free fall. If he succeeds, he can increase his trade value. There doesn't appear to be a realistic situation where RGIII doesn't start next season. The question is whether or not he'll have a new coach.

For the Rams? This seems to be a potential problem for me. Cousins at this point is the better pocket passer, the O line seems to prefer him at this point, and he could be a shot in the arm for the beleagured franchise. I think in the short term this increases their chance to win, especially against extremely weak secondaries in Atlanta and Dallas.

Should be interesting. Hopefully this doesn't diminish the value of the pick the Rams are owed too much.

    Thoughts?

Shanny was supposedly going to quit because Snyder was giving special treatment to RG3 which would disrupt the locker room and alienate players. Now he's benching RG3 in worthless games because he doesn't want to risk RG3 getting hurt yet all the other players must work harder to overcome this.

Sounds completely reasonable and not at all dysfunctional.

(how does one determine that the o-line prefers the backup over the starter?)

There's been a couple of comments by 'Skins lineman indicating that they are getting too much of the blame for the number of sacks that they are having. Part of it of course is their fault, but after several weeks of 'our line sucks!' from the Washington fans, there's been a lot more talk on the radio about how half the sacks are being generated by Griffin breaking the pocket even when he's safe and creating bad stats for his offense.

Kirk Cousins was sacked a LOT at Michigan State.

I'll agree that QBs are a major force in the number of sacks an oline allows. Possibly even more than the Oline itself. It's amazing how often sack totals follow QBs from college to the pros and then when they switch teams within the NFL. As a Mizzou fan, any MU fan could have told the Jags that Gabbert had horrific pocket presence.

People always said Bugler took a lot of hits which he did. sacks / pass attempts was 8%.
For Gabbert it is somewhere around 9.5%. Absolutely horrific.
RG3 is just over 8%. Bad.

A guy like Brees is down <4%.

Bradford is around 6.5%. Average especially considering everyone is always wanting to overhaul the oline.

When everyone said Martz was killing Warner with all the sacks, he was at 6.8%.

The Skins situation is in a lose/lose mode atm imho, if Cousins succeeds then there is a rift and QB controversy. If he fails then RG the third is villified and feels his negative comments are justified. Which perhaps causes more ill feelings amongst his team mates. The owner will be put into even a worse light if Griffin fails in the years to come as he just might... What has turned out to be a god send for us might be a long downwards spiral to long term mediocrity. Could be some hard years for Skins fans coming up, I actually kinda feel sorry for the fans.
