Source: Texans And Raiders In Serious Trade Talks For Matt Schaub

HOUSTON (CBS HOUSTON) – The Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders have been in serious talks about a trade involving Matt Schaub heading to Oakland, a source has told SportsRadio 610.

SportsRadio 610 learned that the Texans are trying to make the deal and eventually want a quarterback that can step in an play right away in 2014, whether that is in the draft or in a trade.

The Texans are looking to ship out Matt Schaub and his $10.5 million in salary cap cost to the Raiders, who have $59.9 million in cap space, and free up more cap room for their own ability to grab someone else in free agency or via trade.

There is no word on who or what the Texans would be receiving back from Oakland or if any other players would leave the Texans.

The Texans are one of two teams that have yet to sign a free agent. The Rams are the other.

The Raiders and Texans will meet up in Oakland this year.

I know it's just from a "source", but if something like this happens, it's gotta be great for the Rams. The Texans ditching their former pro-bowl QB has to be a huge indicator for going QB with the first pick. If that's the case, we have much more ground to auction Clowney off.

It also means that the #1 QB is off the board and gives teams time to decide if they want to move up for the #2 guy. Maybe if we see the Texans work out a contract with their guy early, it gives teams who have another QB at #1 to jump over the Jags and get their guy.

Alot of fun possible outcomes here. Let's just hope drafting Clowney and keeping him is one of them.

That makes a lot of sense for Oakland, because Dennis Allen is coaching for his job and is in "win now" mode, so he probably likes his chances better with a veteran passer than a rookie. That would also allow Oakland the freedom to draft the left tackle they missed out on in free agency.

Houston getting rid of Schaub has been a foregone conclusion since the end of the regular season; I don't think this changes anything on their front.

I agree with this; however, I think it may solidify the fact that they're going QB rather than BPA. This allows teams like the Falcons to to start more intense negotiations to move up for Clowney. It could still be a draft-day trade contingent on Clowney being at 2, but I think it just opens the discussions sooner, which lets the Rams evaluate offers better.

Can't imagine how you'd trade for him. He's still got $10.5 million in guarantees on the cap. He's due $14 million this year. Very rare to see such a trade in the NFL.

When you're a team that entered free agency with the most cap room in NFL history, you've got the space to absorb Schaub's $10 million salary.

If traded, HOUSTON is the team that absorbs the guarantees. Not Oakland.

The $10 million figure is his salary, not his guaranteed money. Houston would receive a cap savings of nearly $4 million by trading him, and the Raiders have the cap space to absorb his current salary under their 2014 cap. It's a win-win if they can work out compensation.

Schaub's cap figure still includes $10.5 million which would automatically hit the Houston salary cap this year if traded. So by trading him they save $3.9 million but then they have to sign a replacement which will cost $1.5+ million probably and be far less talent.

If the Raiders give more than a 6th rounder, they are fools.

The accelerated bonus hit is big, but still provides a savings if he's off the roster. Given that fans were cheering when he was injured, I think that's probably a foregone conclusion. If Houston can get something for him in the process, good for them.

The fact that Oakland is in "win now" mode and has the room to spare to absorb his salary makes them a legitimate landing spot, especially when you consider they need to spend money after (according to my information) not meeting the 89% salary cap spending floor benchmark last year.

Big cap hit or not, Schaub is going to be out of Houston. That much is almost certain. I'd be more surprised if he stayed there than if he was cut/traded. And a $10 million salary is a big one for a new club to absorb onto their books, that's for sure. But the Raiders and their $40 million or so in cap room is just the team to do it.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's cut, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he's traded away by a team like Oakland or Cleveland who has some cap room and doesn't want to compete for his services on the open market.

As for his salary, there's always the fact that the Raiders can agree to the trade only if they can sign him to an altered contract. I mean, they have the cap room and need to spend, but that could end up meaning a front end heavy deal that makes him easier to hold onto for clipboard duty later if they so choose.

But yeah, we knew that Schaub was out. The Texans' couldn't in good conscience bring him back in front of fans that hate him.
    I believe!

With signs pointing to the Texans taking a QB with Schaub possibly going to Raiders, and Bridgewater not doing so well at his proday will give us better trading bait. One good QB left, if Texans take Bortles it will be Johnny M. So can either give someone the spot for Clowney or Johnny M. Supply and Demand. Supply of QBs gone can Demand a much more lucrative deal!

    He's off to the Raiders.

The Oakland Raiders will trade a late-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft to the Houston Texans in exchange for quarterback Matt Schaub, a league source told ESPN.
