Steve Smith or Lee Evans to the Rams? Why This Would Be a Mistake for St. Louis
Steve Smith or Lee Evans to the Rams? Why This Would Be a Mistake for St. Louis
By Casey Crail (Correspondent) on October 11, 2011
Rams PhotosESPN's Adam Schefter tweeted earlier today that the Rams' No. 1 wide receiver, Mark Clayton, is done for the season after tearing his patella tendon Sunday versus the Lions. Clayton who was acquired in the end of the offseason had grown to be rookie quarterback Sam Bradford's favorite target, catching 23 passes for 306 yards and two TDs.
Since this news has come to the NFL universe, rumors have speculated that the Rams may attempt to trade for either Carolina's Steve Smith or Buffalo's Lee Evans. Both have been speculated over the last few weeks as to be on the trade block.
Both veteran receivers could be brought in to help any team, but the reason the Rams should not bring either in is because I am not sure St. Louis' focus is entirely on winning the NFC West this year...maybe three years from now, winning for three or four years in a row, but not in 2010.
With multiple first-round talents in this year's draft, the Rams should look to the draft to get Bradford's partner for the passing game of the future. Georgia's AJ Green would be a very good pick that could shake up the NFC West if he meets the expectations being compared to Detroit's Calvin Johnson and Minnesota's Randy Moss.
By getting one of these two veterans, the Rams will be better for the remainder of this season, but even if the Rams were to make the playoffs after acquiring one of these two veterans, a run is extremely far-fetched as there are too many question marks circulating on defense. Instead, drafting is the way to go so your young QB can grow with your young receiver.
An asking price from either Carolina or Buffalo has not yet been speculated, so unless either receiver talks his way out of the team, the Rams would have to give up minimally a third-round pick. If they can get a bargain if either team is already trying to look to the draft for all their answers, then maybe the Rams should invest in one of these players

Sadly I have to agree, we aren't going to win the division this year (possibly next), and with so many holes in our team we should continue to build through the draft so that we can establish some solid depth thus we can't afford to continue dumping draft pics for A. veteran players who may not remain w/ the team, and B. will hamper our young QB's growth.

But if it costs us a 4th round pick, or even a 3rd rounder.. do it in a heartbeat. WRs are always easy to find in the draft. You want a proven WR to be on your team.

If WRs are easy to find in the draft, then why trade a pick away for one, when we can just find one in the draft? Why don't we already have a stable of easy-finds on our team? We've certainly drafted enough in the last couple of years for this.
I don't think it's as easy as you think. Look at Nick's latest article for proof of that concept.

I agree with getting Lee for a 4th or later pick only because he is younger then draft a 1st round wr n getting clayton back will be a big help if we do this and get good late pics i really think we can win the division necxt year wtih bradford having a year under his belt
