Strike Kampman off your wish list.
Jaguars snag Pro Bowlers Kampman, Osgood
Posted: March 7th, 2010 | NFL.com Staff |
Aaron Kampman signed a multiyear deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars late Saturday night, a league source told NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora. The Pro Bowl pass rusher, who was in Jacksonville for a free-agent visit on Saturday, will be announced at a team news conference on Sunday.
It was the second Pro Bowl free-agent deal negotiated by the Jaguars on Saturday, as the team also agreed to terms with special teams ace Kassim Osgood.
Kampman, who struggled in his transition from a 4-3 defensive end to a 3-4 outside linebacker last year with the Green Bay Packers, will immediately help a Jaguars defensive unit that finished the 2009 season with a league-low 14 sacks. He will be used as an end in Jacksonville’s 4-3, presumably opposite former first-round pick Derrick Harvey, who mans the right side of Jacksonville’s defensive line.
In the Packers’ 4-3 scheme, Kampman was annually among the league leaders in sacks. He compiled 37 sacks in a three-year period from 2006-08, but that dropped off last season when he had just 3.5 in new defensive coordinator Dom Capers’ 3-4 scheme. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Week 11, and spent the remainder of the season on injured reserve.
There was some concern over the injury, but Packers coach Mike McCarthy had stated recently that Kampman was well ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.
Jacksonville was Kampman’s lone free-agent visit, although Seattle and Philadelphia were reportedly also interested.
Osgood, a three-time Pro Bowl special teams selection, spent most of his career in San Diego as the Chargers’ fourth or fifth wide receiver. He had been seeking a team in free agency that would give him a shot at becoming a more prominent piece of its offense.

Re: Strike Kampman off your wish list.
im a big Kampman fan and thought he would have been a great fit for us..but with the knee injury even if surgery was successful..he probably wont be back to full health for another year and at 30 i suspect the Rams might have just found that too risky for them to go for him,all things considered...
good luck in Jacksonville Aaron..glad you didnt go to a team i hate.

I'm not shedding tears at the lost..
Just another 30 year old guy with injury concerns that would have had to been drastically overpaid to come to the Rams with other teams bidding on him as well.
Moving on..

Re: Strike Kampman off your wish list.
would have been nice to pick this guy up, but it wouldn't have been until down the road. he clearly isn't recovered from his injury yet, although he could be ready by the time the year starts. jags are taking a huge risk here picking him up while he's still recovering.
