The thing that makes me hesitate with Tavon Austin...

Let me start by saying that Tavon Austin is one of the fastest rising players on my draft boards. He was my choice for the Rams at #22 in my latest mock and, depending on who is still on the board, I might consider him at #16.

    But here's my question...

Where was the groundswell of support for Austin in January?

After all, its not like he came from nowhere. He played at West Virginia, a major college program, and he faced top quality competition. He had the numbers. Everyone knew, long before he ran the 40, that he was extremely fast.

In January, few had him slotted as a first round pick. Most had him somewhere in the second round.

Now, everyone is posting his highlight film and saying he's a clear first round pick, perhaps even a Top 15 choice.

Was that highlight film not available in January?

I guess what I'm asking is... is everyone, myself included, being influenced too much by the hype machine?

Maybe he's the next Percy Harvin, minus the headaches (both those he suffers from, and those he has caused).

Or maybe he's just Dexter McCluster with a better PR agent.

With two first round picks, I think the Rams can afford to take the chance that he's the former. But, I still wonder...

Where was all this talk in January?

Where was all this talk in January?

NFL scouts (real ones that get paid) don't divulge their secrets to the media, rather only to the teams that pay them. Mel Kiper types abound, but they change their tune from January to April as well. We fans, however, not being held accountable, are allowed to get hyped up to the max.

Where was all this talk in January? Well heck, it was only January - now it's almost April. Let the "hype" abound !!!

I think that his height kept him from being a first rounder in January. If he was 6'+ with his abilities then he'd be all you heard about. It's possible that he's risen because more people are trying to find out how good Geno Smith is and are coming around to how much Austin helped him out.

I wouldn't -- he is a Darren Sproles type player that is worthy in Round 2 (maybe) or later....

Not a round 1 selection for me....

I don't think anyone has answered my question.

We don't know what the real scouts think. They are clearly not the source of the hype.

As for his height... he has not grown an inch since January, so I don't see how that could be the reason for the change of opinion.

I suppose it could be that people didn't start really watching his game films until he wowed the observers at the Combine but, for a media filled with so-called-experts, you'd think they would have started their analysis last fall, not in February.

I think there where a lot of people that thought we would sign Amendola back, once he was gone Austin has become an option.

The groundswell is hardly limited to Rams fans, so that's clearly not the answer.

Thought you meant here on the board.

Who knows why these guys move... but then it does not hurt when you have a nice combine and pro day. Geno brought more eyes to his pro day and he kind of stole the show.

PR like this does not hurt.

After attending West Virginia's Pro Day on Thursday, ESPN's Ron Jaworski predicted WR Tavon Austin will be a top-15 pick.
"This guy is absolutely lightning quick," said Jaws. "He's one of the quickest guys I've ever seen and I've been around the game since 1973. This guy just accelerates when he gets the football and, although he's a little bit diminutive, I think this guy's gonna go in the top 15." Carolina would be an intriguing landing spot at No. 14. New Panthers GM Dave Gettleman -- a former Giants exec -- could see some Victor Cruz in the versatile Austin.

Mike Mayock: Tavon Austin is a 'matchup nightmare'

INDIANAPOLIS -- Texas pass-catcher Marquise Goodwin and West Virginia wideout Tavon Austin were two of the fastest wide receivers in the 40-yard dash Sunday at the NFL Scouting Combine.

And while both were fast, but they're not equal football players, said NFL Network's Mike Mayock and Charles Davis.

"In football pads, the good thing about Austin -- we don't know as much about Goodwin as a wideout -- I can tell you about Tavon Austin," Mayock told Rich Eisen. "You want to talk about one of the most electric players I've ever seen in college football. He put a performance on against the University of Oklahoma that was one of the most amazing I've ever seen. Over 500 yards of offense -- he played mostly tailback."

Said Mayock: "In the NFL, it's all about matchups, and this young man is a matchup nightmare. What I love about (Austin), he's got good hands. We already know he can run, we know how quick he is. I know he's tough. And he's a game-changer."
    Jeremiah: A run to riches
Daniel Jeremiah says there's no hotter prospect than Terron Armstead, who posted a stunning 40 time ... at 306 pounds! More ...

Charles Davis cites Austin as a legitimate threat who makes defenders miss in space. Even when men are in position, Austin finds a way to get past obstacles for chunks of real estate. The early read on Goodwin suggests an unfinished product.

"(Austin) is a football player who runs like a track athlete," Davis said. "Marquise Goodwin, in my opinion, is a track athlete trying to play the game of football. And it's a different deal."

Their speed alone means both men are assured an NFL home, but Austin might have helped himself as much as any skill player at the combine.
All this happened after January... his stock is on the rise.

Patterson wasn't being hyped untill early this year as well. It's all about size and athleticism that causes a player to be hyped up around this time of year.

What I don't get it SHARIFF FLOYD. He was way down the draft boards and then he has randomly come into top 3 talk. I think he's good, but I don't think he's THAT good.

Well as we know, the closer we get to the draft the more hype we'll be fed.

In January we were talking about Johnny "Football", Mantei Teo, his girlfriend and the National Championship game. The only real talk about WV at that time was Geno Smith peaking too soon and sliding out of the heisman race. IMO, that as much as anything, had an adverse effect on Austin.

Re: The thing that makes me hesitate with Tavon Austin...

Even though he wasn't always the top-15 talent people are making him out to be now, in my opinion he's definitely been a 1st round player all throughout the year. When WVU started off 5-0, Geno Smith was getting most the press but scouts were salivating at the type of game that Austin was bringing each and every week.It was only after the Baylor and Texas games that most casual football fans began to take notice that Tavon was something special. His speed was always there, but his 40 time at the combine just confirmed it. And as for all his highlight videos hitting Youtube in January, most people wait until after the bowl games before they start making yearly compilation tapes.

I blame the fact that the memory was fresh in everyone's mind how Austin and Smith got schooled by Syracuse.
    I believe!

Re: The thing that makes me hesitate with Tavon Austin...

I do think the hype is starting to get a little bit ahead of Austin right now. He's been in my first round mocks since the underclassmen declared, but I wouldn't have viewed him as a potential Top 15 pick.

I find myself in kind of an interesting vantage point, since I've watched him here in Morgantown since he arrived. A lot of the praise I agree with, but some I don't. For instance, I don't know how some can say with such certainty that he can line up outside at the pro level. It wasn't his forte at WVU, as he made most of his receiving highlights by outmaneuvering defenders over the middle of the field from the slot.

There's a part of me that wonders if players like him are helped out by the rookie wage scale; it's easier to spend a higher pick on a guy who is more of a specialist than a legit #1 prototypical prospect when you don't have to pay him uber-money right out of the gate.

Honestly, I think a lot of the supposed movement in February for draft prospects is because many fans and journalists weren't paying as close of attention during the college football season as they'd like to think or claim.

When a guy like Jon Cyprien goes from a Day Three unknown to a potential first round pick due to the Senior Bowl, it makes you wonder why he wasn't being talked up in October and November.

The reason, IMO, is because we're all basically amateurs, even many of those who regularly watch and even write about the sport, and the offseason gives many of us our first real in-depth look at many of these guys. After all, it's not like we're sitting in a film room spending the majority of our day watching coach's tape.

    Sorry, that got very rambly.

I agree with a lot of what Nick said.

I guess my answers are that he is (1) fairly unique and (2) electrifying on the field.
