Thomas on 1380: It's down to the two Longs

Posted by playmaker on another forum...

Jim Thomas was just on Team 1380 with Bernie and Randy....

On the draft.....

The Rams won't say it, but it is down to the two Longs, Chris and Jake, for the #2 pick.

Haslett wants Dorsey.

Linehan and Haslett want Chris Long.

Devaney and Linehan want Jake Long.

Rams are allowed 30 draft prospects to visit Rams Park along with 5 "locals".

April 13 is the day both Long's, Dorsey, and Gholston are coming in to Rams Park.

Gholston is the "trade down plan."

Zygmunt really doesn't have much to do with the draft. More of a free agent person.

He said the Rams will have their draft board completed the Wednesday before the draft.

O-Line coach Steve Loney is already getting frustrated with Alex Barron. Thomas said if the Rams draft Jake Long, he wouldn't be shocked if Barron is traded before camp.

He also hit on the Rams Training Camp site. Said it will most likely be a town an hour outside of Madison Wisconsin, Osh Gosh, where the University of Wisconsin used to hold camp. And Macomb Illinois is the backup plan.

He hit on the jersey article he wrote about this morning but nothing new.

Re: Thomas on 1380: It's down to the two Longs

Wow, it didn't take Alex long to make a bad impression.

That's an interesting wrinkle if Chris Long is the pick of both coaches, but not the scout's pick. It also seems like the choice of the main draft guru and the head coach would trump the opinion of the defensive coordinator, which might mean Jake Long would top our draft board. I wonder what kind of value we could get for Barron under that scenario? I think I'd still prefer a defensive end myself, though.

Don't think Barron is a would be good guard anyways or able to beat out Cogs. I would gladdy trade him for Lito Sheppard, Fabian Washington or a 2nd or 3rd. Then add a FA like Shane Olivea for depth

If this is the case, the trade down plan is the best thing that can happen to the Rams. Not only would they get the best pass rusher, but besides the extra pick(s) they would receive, they'd also save some money.

So no matter how they slice it, Gholston is still the best pick.

Ok, who do you see in the top five trading up to get someone? The Chiefs need to trade down even more than us. The Raiders don't have the cap room anymore to pay a #2 pick. The Falcons have the picks, but are just one below us, and have no desire to trade up because they'll be content to take Dorsey, Long or Long, whoever falls.

Want to trade with the Jets? Why would they trade up? They don't have the cap room either, nor the picks.

Face it people, we won't be trading our first round pick. As for Gholston, tell me why he's better than Jake or Chris Long at #2. We need an instant starting, impact and most importantly NFL-ready player. I don't feel that Gholston fits that mold as well as he should at #2.

What really gets me is that Barron would be traded before camp. I mean, sure, if he brings us a playmaker, hopefully on defense, but still, that's a lot more than I was thinking. I figured that he could play guard for us at least. It also means that we still need a top tackle in the next couple of years; either left side if Jake somehow can't play LT, or a right side to replace Long once he moves over. I guess it depends on what we can get for Barron.

If Jake Long is still on the board, the Chiefs might consider moving up. I tend to agree that the Falcons will be content to sit. If all else fails, they take Matt Ryan to replace their incarcerated QB. The Jets might be willing to trade up...but if they did, it might be to land Gholston, so that doesn't really work. The Chiefs would probably be our best bet if we really wanted to trade down.

Interesting suggestion. The Eagles' starting offensive tackles are Tra Thomas (age 33) and Jon Runyan (age 34). They drafted Winston Justice as a possible tackle of the future, but it sounds as if they'd like to find another one. Normally I wouldn't expect Barron to bring in much in a straight-up trade, maybe something like fourth or fifth round value at best, but in a package with a lower pick for Sheppard could be an interesting proposition.

If we draft Jake Long at #2 and sign Quentin Groves at #33, I wouldnt complain. As long as DE is addressed. I can't stand another season of a QB standing a quarter and a half in the pocket any more.

Agreed Nick, but even though OT is a need for them, what do you think the Eagles value Barron at? If we get Jake and Lito for the combo of our first and fifth and Barron, I'd be happy. Still means we need another OT though.

Re: Thomas on 1380: It's down to the two Longs

Why is BARRONS value so low ? i thought he was a mid- 1st round pick . He can't be thought of as a bust since he has been with us , but at least he has been uninjured and pretty dependable besides the false starts . why wouldn't a team with big tackle problems fire us off a mid to late 2nd rounder , he would have to be right there talent wise with the second round picks and has experiance .

i think we should just trade him now for picks to someone and just replace him in the draft if the RAMS want to settle on JAKE LONG .
