Time to go shopping!
Tomorrow, the Rams will hit the FA market with a pocket full of cash. And, give today’s roster purge, they’re going to need it.
First things first.
There are some players who have been let go who we may miss. Heck, I’ve always liked Ron Bartell, who I believe has been one of our better draft picks of the last ten years. But, when you have a new regime running a team that has won as few games as the Rams have in recent years, few jobs are going to be safe.
Now, things look a bit scary. By my count, the Rams will be returning less than half of their starters from last year. It seems like an overwhelming task to fill all those spots.
Well, take a deep breath. The Rams have the resources to fill out this roster.
By my count, the Rams have around $30M in cap room already. They can clear even more by restructuring the contract of Jason Smith, which I think is likely to occur. So, even if the Rams shop for top shelf FAs, they should be able to add four quality starters before draft day.
Add to that three of the top 40 picks in the draft, and that gives the Rams a chance (and yes, I know there are no guarantees) to upgrade 7 starting positions (8 if Robert Quinn proves to be an upgrade over James Hall). The rest of the starters, as well as the depth, will come from the “secondary” FA market and the Rams current second-tier players.
Is that enough? Well, to be realistic, the Rams are not likely to become a Super Bowl team overnight (though it did happen once). That said, they have a chance to be a much improved team, with four first round picks in 2013-14 to further bolster the roster.
One thing is certain.
This will be a different team.
That’s not a bad thing.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: Time to go shopping!
There's 26 players under contract (including tendered Amendola) and 16 practice squad no name types.
They better go shopping.
Since all the roster dumping free agency seems much more exciting.

This is like one of those home makeover tv shows. Two guys go in, gut the place, and start all over. But can they make the deadline? Don't miss this weeks episode of Extreme Rams Makeover!
