Re: Trade Down
If there were a clear-cut best OT that I thought we could get only with #2 overall, I'd say stay there and grab him. But as of right now there are 3-4 OTs that are graded pretty close to each other, so I chose trade down twice and pick up a couple extra 2nd rounders.
Of course, it's always easier said than done to do so.

Re: Trade Down
This question probably won't have a clear cut answer until the 9th minute the Rams are on the clock.
However, since the question is being asked today, I'll answer as best as possible for today...........trade back a couple of times and stockpile. No single player is going to turn this ship around; and a good FO will find talent in a teen pick as easily as in a top 10 pick."Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

Re: Trade Down
There are 4-5 OTs who will likely go in the first round (probably in the top 20 picks). If the Rams could trade back a few spots and obtain an extra #2, while at the same time remaining in a position to draft one of the top OTs, I would not be opposed to that.
Welcome to the St. Louis Rams!

Re: Trade Down
Exactly. Of the five teams making the first five selections in this draft, I would imagine fans of all five teams would advocate for them to trade down. But it's easier said than done, and realistically happens very rarely. Remember we were in talks to trade down last year but those fell through. At the top of the board, very rarely do moves ever get made. It's just too difficult right now finding teams who want to move up at the cost of (1) additional picks and (2) the additional amount they'd have to pay in rookie deals for a player drafted higher.

Re: Trade Down
Snag Crabtree and trade it to a team who wants him bad. We cannot have Seattle get this guy.

Re: Trade Down
Use the damn pick. There's a reason why we're here in the first place and the fastest way out is with the players considered to be best available.

Re: Trade Down
With the NFL collective bargaining agreement in its last year, wouldn't make more sense for underclassmen to declare? If in fact the Detroit Lions did select either Stafford or Bradford, and the Rams are sitting at #2 overall, As you proposed in your mock, the Chiefs might well wish to go QB. Assuming our new FO leadership and HC don't want to go QB, isn't there a good chance another team desirous of obtaining a top tier QB would want to move up? If we do in fact end up drafting at #2 overall, I think we'd have a decent shot at trading down if either Bradford or Stafford is still on the board when we pick ...

Re: Trade Down
Trade down once and get an MLB: Maualuga or Laurinaitis.
There are doubts about all the top three OT prospects: Smith may be overweight and slow; Oher blows hot and cold; Monroe lacks discipline. There isn't a top QB prospect in this draft (2010 should be deep in this position) and we're screwed with Bulger's contract, anyway.
The defence needs more redressing than does the offence (get rid of Al Saunders' "miracle" playbook and our offensive problems would be halved); Pace has another year in him and we can always address the problem RT slot through free agency. We could use our extra 2nd round choice on either a centre or a strong safety; the 2009 draft is deep in both positions.

Re: Trade Down
Definitely.
Both of these guys are projected to go in the first round by the vast majority of mock drafts; they are real impact players and will enable us to move Witherspoon back outside, where he is seen to better advantage, and also help us deal with the run through the middle. Granted, it isn't conventional wisdom to take an MLB with the second or third overall pick but if we trade down a few places, we could still secure one of them.
Another option would be to take a top-class MLB in free agency, but Devaney has already intimated that funds may be tight.

Re: Trade Down
dream scenario:
Rams trade #2 overall for #8 overall & #40 overall.
#8: St. Louis Rams select MLB Rey Maluauga or MLB James Lauraintis.
Rams trade #34 overall & #40 overall for #24 overall.
#24 Rams select OT Jason Smith
not sure how it checks out on the draft value chart but a scenario similar to this would allow us to really get that stud MLB we need, move Spoon to the strong side like distant indicated and we get a solid LT for the future.. throw in a safety with our 3rd round pick and maybe a center in free agency and we're on the right track.
