Two first round/one second round pick - All defense!?!?

    That would be crazy, right?

For example, if the Rams took Jadeveon Clowney, Justin Gilbert and Jimmy Ward, would that be a huge mistake?

I submit to you... its happened before.

    Let's go back to 1971.

With the 10th pick in the draft, the Los Angeles Rams selected, Isaiah Robertson, LB, Southern.

With the 20th pick in the draft, the Los Angeles Rams selected, Jack Youngblood, DE, Florida.

With the 63rd pick in the draft, the Los Angeles Rams selected, Dave Elmendorf, S, Texas A&M.

That worked out pretty well, no?

    Could history repeat itself?

What is the rest of the story though? We're we set up on offense and just needed to upgrade the defense? Were these three all taken to be immediate starters or were they depth to make a strong defense even stronger? I don't think anybody will say those were bad picks but telling us who the first three picks in 1971 and asking if we should do the same this year without the whole picture gets you an informed quality answer.

I don't think any of the Rams' teams of the 70s were "stacked" on offense. Rather, those teams made their living on great defensive squads that were largely built through the draft.

Just a historical example. I'm not saying I think the Rams should plan to take defensive players with their first three selections. However, it is possible that a BPA approach could produced such an outcome (it is also possible that a BPA approach could result in 3 offensive players).

Only would need to score one TD a game to win!!

Would not be a mistake. There are MULTIPLE scenarios where you could get elite defensive talent and the Rams would be virtually forced to draft that way. Assuming they trade down:

    #6-10 Gilbert, Mack, Barr
    #13 Clinton Dix, Pryor Dennard
2nd round: Fuller, Roby, Ward, K Martin, Nix, Hageman.

Amazingly, Barr is off everyone's radar in discussions but at a trade down pick to 6-10 or 13, he's a real option.

I certainly wouldn't have any problem with it. Except I'd probably shoot for Clowney, Donald and Buchanon.

Adding those players to our current defense would likely make us a mainstay, when it comes to the top defenses in the league for years to come.

And even if we only scored the 21 points per game we did with last years offense (though that total figures to increase with the upgrade at QB and the addition of Britt), this team would be much improved and no doubt, playoff bound.
