    Walter Football on Donnie Avery

After saying the Rams should take Michael Crabtree second overall which I hope we don't (if anything I want them to use that possibility as a smokescreen to trade down a few picks)

"Now, I know the Rams are in more of a dire need of an upgrade at tackle, but they really could use a No. 1 receiver. Torry Holt's play really fell off in 2008, and there's a very good chance the regressing former Pro Bowler, who turns 33 in June, could be cut or traded. Donnie Avery had a very good rookie season, but at 5-11, 190, he can't be the top wideout. "

Wait...weren't both Holt and Bruce 6 feet and less than 200 pounds? So wouldn't a 5-11 Avery and a 6-1 Burton be enough size to match what was the greatest tandem of WR's in the history of the NFL? I am not saying they have enough talent to do this, but their size shouldn't be a factor in who we draft.

If you read the rest of his analysis he says the Rams could sign Crabtree to help seell tickets. I don't think that is completely far fetched it actually makes a little sense.

Sadly I would probably buy a Michael Crabtree jersey the day we draft him

So from a marketing standpoint it does make sense...

That's not a sad thing...it's sad when people are so set on the player they think their team should pick that they would refuse to root for someone else if their player isn't picked.

Even though I really want Raji, I would be a huge Michael Crabtree fan if the Rams decide to pick him. I wouldn't buy a jersey though. I'm saving my jersey money for 2012 when the Rams pick Blaine Gabbert as the QB of the future in the first round.

Their logic about Holt is fine, but saying Avery can't be a top wideout because he's 5'11" and 190 pounds just doesn't make any kind of sense.

Hmm...Steve Smith! He is a small player, however he makes the probowl and he's a top receiver that everyone knows about due to his talent on the team.

Devaney, if you care about this team... fire the offensive coordinator!!!!

Re: Walter Football on Donnie Avery

Just for the record, Avery stacks up fairly well with Holt and Bruce in their rookie seasons statistically

    Avery 53 rec 674 yds 3 TD
    Holt 52 rec 788 yds 6 TD
    Bruce 21 rec 272 yds 3 TD

Not saying he will become as great as those two, but the kind of numbers he put up in his rookie year are comparable to Holt and better than Bruce.

Holt also came into a very favorable situation, so those numbers can be taken with a grain of salt.

I think we need a good foil to Avery. A taller player for jump balls, or a physical player to run tough routes over the middle (assuming McMichael isn't up to it!).

Seems to me that Looker and Burton could fill the "over the middle role".
    Semper Fi!
