    Re: We need a qb!!!

You can have a manageable offense with a mediocre QB and a good line. You'll always have a poor offense with a great QB and a mediocre line. Looking down the road we definitely need a QB, but its a waste to have a great QB with no line to protect him. Given our receivers and our running back, an improved line would immediately make us a middle of the road offense even with Marc playing stagnant. But it will take more than one draft pick. We need a center, two tackles, and a guard to make the line decent.

Exactly. Quarterbacks don't play in a vacuum, they need pieces around them to be successful. Pieces we don't have right now.

Nearly every piece of this offensive line needs to be retooled for the future - both tackles and center at least, but perhaps one if not both guard positions. We have question marks at tight end, nothing at fullback, and through we have a stud running back, he can't seem to stay on the field. Holt is an inconsistent #1 WR and even though I like Avery I don't envision him stepping into those shoes any time soon. On top of that, an offense's best friend is a good defense, and ours is far from it. This defense is 29th in ypg and 31st in ppg defensively. There really isn't a defensive position we couldn't stand to upgrade - DT, DE, LB, CB, FS, SS. Some obviously more important than others, but they all need help. The defense showed some sparks when Haslett took over, but other times looked worse then than they ever did under Linehan.

So the solution is what now? To spend a top three pick on a QB, and give him a bigger contract than Bulger's? That likely means we'll have to cut Bulger to avoid having the league's most highly-paid clipboard holder. Now the Rams are looking at $11 million in dead space against the cap for a guy who isn't on the team. Good luck being active in the free agent market and addressing other needs when you anticipate a tenth of your cap for the year is going to be dead money. Nevermind that by cutting Bulger, we'll likely be forcing a rookie passer onto the field before he's ready. That's fine if you have pieces around him to help out, such as the top ten running attacks and defenses that Atlanta and Baltimore have. But we don't have that.

If we draft a rookie QB at the top of the first round, we're not getting Matt Ryan and the instant success of the Falcons. We're getting JaMarcus Russell and the continued struggles of the Raiders. Why? Because we simply do not have enough talent on the rest of the team to help make that rookie QB successful right out of the gate.

Teams like the Steelers, the Redskins, the Packers, the Broncos, the Bills, the Browns, and the Ravens have shown recently that you do not need to use a top five or even top ten pick on a QB in order to find a capable passer. The last thing the Rams need to do is get into this mindset that, with such a high pick, they can't afford to pass on a quarterback. No quarterback, rookie or veteran, is going to be successful unless you surround him with at least some capable talent. The Rams are pretty short in that area, so IMO, that's where the focus needs to be. When we've built up a solid foundation, then let's add our new franchise signal caller. That way he can step in and have some help already in place.

We will need a qb much faster, let fix the o line, mlb, and ss and go find a young qb that we can develop. Got an idea how about Berlin LOL.
