    Weaver too expensive, maybe Karney?

Rams | May be interested in Karney
    Sun, 08 Mar 2009 13:36:34 -0700

Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports the St. Louis Rams may be interested in unrestricted free-agent FB Mike Karney (Saints).

Obviously this is just pure speculation at this point, but I think he could be a nice viable option at the right price.

    Good.

One thing the Rams have been lacking recently is some good ASU representation on the roster.

He was a friend of mine on myspace, but he disappeared. I was going to tell him to check us out as we could use a fullback. I cannot believe how bad Krieder was for us.

The single worst move of the linehan regime was the release of hedgehung. Even worse than the signing of bennett, which at least had some logic behind it at the time. Waiving hedgehung for richard owens was pure insanity.

Not even close IMO. Not in the same ballpark as hiring Jim Haslett or passing on both Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan or signing Marc Bulger to a huge long term deal or a number of other things.

In fact, I think the most over exaggerated bad move is the release of a replaceable FB who happened to catch on to a championship caliber team. I would take Karney over Hedgecock any day. If they Rams do get Karney now, I'd thank Linehan for opening up the spot.

Not to get off topic, but hindsight is 20/20, and the Rams had many more glaring needs than QB at those times. I wouldn't fault the Rams for passing on those players in either case, as quarterback was not a round one priority at the time.

What was wrong with hiring haslett? Were you complaining when he won his first two games beating dallas and washington?

No one criticized the bulger signing at the time. We can debate bulger all you want, but i dont recall one person on this board complaining. His numbers at the time were absolutely in the very elite group of qbs and that is not a debatable point. I also recall some sentiment for dorsey last year. I dont recall anyone suggesting we draft ryan.

Hindsight is indeed 20-20. Karney may or may not be better than hedgecock. The giants, who are pretty darn good judges of talent, signed him to a five year deal and are thrilled with him. I think he did a lot more than "catch on" with them. Furthermore, the move left of with no fullback on the roster which in and of itself was idiotic. Solid young player, low cap value, strong special teams contributor. I dont see why you think thats so easy to replace and trust me, if we sign karney, it is NOT going to be at the same cost as a 7th round draft pick cap wise.

Does anyone have any info on why The Saints went with Evans over Karney?

Is it because Karney was too one-dimensional,injuries, character issues? he's a good blocker,no?

That's what I understood from it. They wanted Evans because he is a better receiving threat and would offer more to the offense. Karney is more of a pure blocking fullback.

Hedgehawg was an under utilized stud. Karney would be good for the right price.

Re: Weaver too expensive, maybe Karney?

The thing with Hedgecock is that Linehan never really liked him to begin with. Remember in 2006 he had brought Paul Smith (FOSL) in and we had him and Hedgecock on the roster? Smith got most of the playing time with Hedgecock riding the pine. I just never understood it at all.

Getting back to the original topic question, I'd LOVE if we got Karney. From what I've seen of him in prime time games, he definitely is a good blocking FB that Jackson would benefit from.
