This week is like Christmas for media hacks.

During most of the year, its tough to be a media hack.

If you report that a player is on the trade market, or that you know of a team's plans, there is a strong chance that an immediate retort from a GM or head coach will shoot down your nonsense and make you look silly.

But this week, everything is different.

You can write whatever you want. Trade rumor... draft plans... its all fair game. Just claim to have a "reliable source." Heck, you don't even need to say that. You can tell your story under the heading of "whispers swirling" or "buzz" or "talk in league circles." It doesn't matter.

    Why?

Because this week, unlike any other week, teams CAN'T RESPOND. To do so would reveal too much. Teams can't say "no, we're not targeting that player," because that could scare off trade partners. Likewise, they can't verify interest, as doing so could prompt others to trade above you in the draft. Teams have to be deliberately vague to keep their options open.

So, this week, unlike any other week, the only ones really talking are the media hacks. In fact, most of their stories are arguments with each other.

"The team is locked in on Player A."

"No, our sources say its just a smokescreen."

"That's exactly what you'd expect a team locked in on Player A to say."

Meanwhile, when team representatives agree to go on camera, they have to tap dance around any concrete questions. This just provides more fodder for the media to speculate over.

The good news is that the draft will be here in just over 48 hours, and the media hacks will have to go back to.... gasp... reporting FACTS.

Its almost like they'll be journalists.

    Not really, but almost.

Re: This week is like Christmas for media hacks.

    Allow me to illustrate.

This is from Rotoworld. First, the facts:

Coach Jeff Fisher endorsed Sam Bradford at the Rams' pre-draft presser. "Sam is our starter," Fisher said. "That is why I took the job."
    Now, the commentary:

Although an endorsement on the surface, Fisher's words are hardly unequivocal. In reality, all he's really saying is that Bradford is the Rams' starter right now. Fisher has set it up so he can insist Bradford was his man all along if the Rams pass on Johnny Manziel, but has hardly quashed the talk. GM Les Snead passed on a similar opportunity on Tuesday's NFL AM on NFL Network.
So, basically... unless Snead or Fisher were to say "WE ARE NOT TAKING JOHNNY MANZIEL," Rotoworld (and their fellow media hacks) will continue to speculate that this is an elaborate ploy and that the Rams want Manziel.

Of course, if the Snead or Fisher were to say that, the trade value of the second pick would be diminished significantly.

    Merry Hackmas!

It's getting to the point now where various sports writers are essentially arguing amongst themselves because of the different information from different sources

And it's all probably just Les Snead sitting in the same room with 10 different phones and a variety of fake accents
    RealRam and gap like this.

Past few days have made me dizzy with all the draft reports and articles.

...Which in turn generate an avalanche of new threads here.

...Which in turn produce a little itch on the scalp.

    ...It's a lot of fun!

    Tik-tok. Tik-tok. Tik-tok.

    Let's do this.
