Former Philadelphia Eagles running back Brian Westbrook has signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco *****, the team announced Monday.
Westbrook's deal is worth a base $1.25 million and a maximum of $2.5 million with all incentives, a league source tells NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora.
The two-time Pro Bowler spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Eagles, holding the team's all-time records in receptions (426), receiving yards (3,790) and receiving touchdowns (29) by a running back.
Since 2004, Westbrook leads all NFL RBs in receptions (380), receiving yards (3,372), receiving TDs (25) and yards after catch (3,137).
The other teams that had expressed interest in the 30-year old Westbrook this offseason were the St. Louis Rams, who are looking for a backup behind Steven Jackson, and the Washington Redskins, whom Westbrook visited in May. His younger brother, Byron, is a cornerback for the Redskins.
The move by the ***** come less than a week after backup RB Glen Coffee announced his retirement, leaving a hole behind starter Frank Gore in the Niners' backfield. The other running backs on San Francisco's roster include rookie Anthony Dixon, Michael Robinson, Jehuu Caulcrick and Brit Miller.

Westbrook took less money to go to ***** than the Rams offered. He will make a base of $1.25M and could earn up to $2.5M.

Westbrook could have earned $250K more in base salary with Rams deal, but could earn $250K more with ***** in incentives

Going to a contender was part of the decision making process, but I've also read that the playing surface played a role as well.

Just saw the Real Sports piece about new evidence linking brain trauma in athletes with ALS/Lou Gehrig's Disease. Shocking to see former Raider RB Steve Smith trapped inside his own body as it shuts down piece by piece.
I hope he isn't making a terrible mistake in coming back at all.

Their back-up running back abruptly retiring may have also had something to do with it...
