What does the Rams 2012 draft board tell us about 2013?

According to Mike Silver's articles last year from the Rams War Room, it seems that the Rams' 2012 draft board looked something like this:

    1. Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
    2. Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
[Possibly Morris Claiborne - but not ranked high enough for pick #6]
    3. Michael Brockers, DT, LSU
    4. Fletcher Cox, DT, Mississippi State
[if Brockers and Cox were both gone by #14]
    5a. Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
    5b. David DeCastro, OG, Stanford
    5c. Reilly Reiff, OT, Iowa

So what does this tell us? Here are some thoughts:

    1. Having Richardson at the top shows a BPA approach, given that Jackson was still in the fold.
    2. Things that fans/media people think - i.e. that Michael Floyd was a close second to Blackmon on the WR list - are not necessarily consistent with the team's views.
    3. There is definitely a list of players viewed as "worth pick #____" and once those players are gone, trade talks begin.
    4. Jeff Fisher would have considered an OL with a mid-late first round pick (contrary to what some have suggested is his mindset about OL in the first round).

Any other tidbits we can glean from this information?

I think this definitely tells us that a running back is a clear possibility in round 1 or 2

I don't think it says that at all. There isn't a back in this draft, IMO, like Richardson.

I think all it says is BPA and that the Rams build a board that is unique of a lot of opinions.

I think trade talks were the initial plan. Don't think they would've drafted any of those players without first looking to trade down.

No, according to Silver, they would have taken Richardson or Blackmon had either still been available at #6.

    Another possible tidbit:

We ultimately drafted: DT, WR, CB, RB, WR, CB, and OG in the first five rounds
The top positions you listed: DT, WR, CB, RB, and OG. Pretty much the same positions listed at the top of the board in the first round.

It definitely looks like there was a list of needs that they would fill or trade back for more picks in the first 5 rounds. With extra picks they kept targeting the same needs. Looks like BPA, but with five very specific needs in mind. It makes me wonder just how far a star DE or Safety would have had to fall last year before the coaches would consider them.

I think last year was it's "own" kind of situation. Fisher and Snead were in their first year and knew they could take ANY player because they wanted their own guys in the building, as well as needed to get an infusion of skill and youth. At the end of the day, 20 players from last year were on the team this year. I see Fisher had a plan to 100% revamp this team. This year I think it'll be more specific to positions that show clear weakness.

I mean it makes you wonder: Science or crap-shoot with the draft? A bit of both I guess.

I agree. I say it every year, how much of the draft boards that are published on the internet have any relevance to the real world? They all seem to be slight variations of previous boards with modifications based upon recent rumors. Guy moves up on one board, he slides a little on another.
