Why the 2014 Draft Class is the Worst Ever
December 11, 2013
While Rams fans everywhere are happy that the team will have two first round picks, one of which is likely to be in the top 5, it won't make much of a difference due to the fact that the 2014 draft class is the worst ever.
This is not just my opinion, and not just an opinion that others in the St. Louis media might share. It is an objective fact.
As usual, I have turned to Pro Football Focus to verify my belief. I looked at the following categories: (1) games played, (2) productive plays, (3) win enhancement percentage, (4) aesthetic improvement factor, and (5) net clutch performance differential.
Looking at these factors, I found that ALL of the players ranked in the Top 100 in the NFL right now were taken in draft years 2000-2013. Not a single player on these lists was from the 2014 draft.
I was, quite frankly, shocked at this finding, so I contacted PFF to verify that their data is correct. Since some of you don't believe me when I tell you that I have such high level sources, I'll simply quote the response that was emailed to me:
Yes, your finding is correct. No player from the 2014 NFL Draft is ranked in the Top 100 of any NFL category. The reason for this should be obvious.
Yes, indeed it is obvious. The 2014 NFL draft pool is the worst ever.
It figures that the one year the Rams have the opportunity to make a big splash in the draft comes when we have the worst group of potential draftees ever.
Some grey clouds never disappear, I guess.
