why is Brooks still a free agent?

Anyone know why derrick Brooks from tampa is still an FA? It seems like he had been brpght up but I couldn't find it. ESPN spoke about him for a sec in between Favre talk, and Artest going to LA:L so the earth may shatter in a couple hours.

He's 36, so its not that surprising. I'm sure he'll be picked up before long. I'd expect he'd go to a contender looking for some veteran leadership.

His age doesn't help him, nor does it likely help him that he's basically restricted to the weak-side position in a Cover 2 defensive scheme where younger faster guys are probably preferred by teams.

I had heard (I think it was John Clayton) that Brooks will probably end up on the Carolina Panthers. Which actually surprised me because Brooks is the type of player that Belicheat of the Patriots usually goes after.

Brooks isn't a 3-4 OLB though... Too small and I doubt if he can rush the passer against tackles consistently.

I heard reported that Brooks wants to be a starter, feels he deserves the chance. If that isn't possible, he may just retire.

He's got 1-2 years remaining at most. Why would a team commit their starting position to the guy unless they were desperate? In mid-August if your starter goes down for the season, maybe.
