Why does the draft start at 4 PM EST?

That's asinine. Kids will probably be in bed by the time the Steelers select their first pick. What's wrong with a noon start? You won't have to compete with baseball (Cardinals v Cubs that day), both the NFL Network and ESPN will still cover the event with more announcers than a political convention, and you just screwed up a great nap by moving the thing to 4 PM EST. The Rams second round pick will probably take place at the same time as Saturday Night Live.

2 major reasons why.

1 - this way the can have a ton of Pre-Draft shows and make more money selling the advertising in the morning.

2 - the late afternoon time slot is much better for Ratings across the country. Last year's draft had the highest rating ever. It was a decision the NFL made after also cutting the time allotted for each team to make their picks. The commish said we will start a little later in the day to allow teams to have some extra time to talk with others at the draft but the league cut the time to make a pick in both first and second rounds.

Overall its a long day no matter how you slice it. It always seems to have extra hype the day of the draft and the west coast football fans don't miss anything either.

Didn't they change it last yr, because the previous yr's draft went on and on and on and on as every team in the first, and majority in the second round took the total allotted time. So they cut day 1 to just 2 rounds and pushed it back so it would be more prime time. But it sucks for us West Coast people because day 2 starts at 7 a.m. for us, which is simply way to early. I personally don't like the change...mostly because of day 2, but as it is, the announcers really do a horrible job covering day 2 anyways. Maybe I should just sleep in.

That's where your teams draft is made. I wanted to see the video footage, instead its all about round 1, and maybe half an hour worth of round 2. It's stupid. Gotta be by a computer for the mid round picks.

Can't say I'm shocked. My understanding is that the TV ratings for the draft are comparable to an NBA Finals game.

The members of the clan in the eastern and central US time zones no longer have to begin drinking beer at midnight the night before to be appropriately prepared for our first pick. Drinking can now commence at 6am saturday with plenty of time for appropriate consumption before we hand our our draft card in round one.
