This is why the Patriots are successful
They passed on first round picks by the Lions and Broncos to stockpile second round picks by trading Cassell and Vrabel to KC. They have three or four selections in the seond round this year.
Why is this brilliant? Number of reasons. One, they don't burn first round money on a player who may not make it. Saves salary cap room. Two, the second round has talent in it also. Lot's of it and if you don't necessarily have to rebuild your whole team (e.g. the Rams) then the second round is a great place to reload.
I don't like the Patriots, but I respect how they conduct their business.

Re: This is why the Patriots are successful
They are also succesful cuz of spygating you forgot to mention that.
And itz cuz they always go Defense when they have a 1st rounder. Remember we tried that but every time we try that it leads to a fail regime

Ya there is no question the Pats have one of if not thee smartest F.O. in the NFL.
Hopefully someday they will say the same about the RAMS.

Re: This is why the Patriots are successful
I'm confused. The Patriots would rather have second round picks than first round picks? If that's the case, the Rams should be offering them our 2nd round pick for a straight up 1st round pick.

Bellicheck believes that picking 34th he can get about the 20th best player (or better) on his board. When you factor in the cap impact, this is a big part of how he gets it done. At the end of the day, its about talent assessment and the patriots have been the most succesful because they have done the best job of evaluating talent AND character and finding players that are likely to be successful in their system.

Re: This is why the Patriots are successful
To add to GC's comment, he get's the player he wants at a 2n round price thus saving cap money at the same time. He didn't want a first round pick, the Pats already have one and that's enough money to spend in Round 1. To have more than one can be detrimental....remember the DLew-archuletta debacle? I refuse to put Pickett with them, RP played well for the Rams. However, all that money wasted on two first rounders was the beginning of the hurting for the Rams.

Re: This is why the Patriots are successful
the pats do a great job of playing a system that can shield deficencies(sic?) in the players they hire,be that through F.A or the Draft...thats why when players come out of that system. they fail and when they hire players like Harrison,Seau etc...who the rest of the NFL believed were washed up,they succeed.
i believe Spags has a bit of this in him...if you look at the Giants roster for the last two years..sure theres a couple of elite players in it but they are mostly made up of the blue collar types only serious football fans would have heard of. i realise the Giants front office and TC was more responsible than Spags for this but Spags turned blue collar journeymen into SB ring wearing champions...lets all hope and pray he can do the same with us.
