Will the Rams add a premium Free Agent this offseason?

On the eve of Free Agency, and with a warm pie cooling on the tampering window as we speak, there's a lot of talk about who the Rams could pursue.

The last two years, we've made big splashes with big names in Long, Finnegan and to a lesser extent Jared Cook. Looking forward, there are plenty of names out there - Verner and Byrd especially seem to be upon everyone's lips.

So, a simple question. Given what we know about our roster, salary cap and draft position, will the Rams add a blue chip, premium player in Free Agency this offseason?

Obviously, it would be great to know why you feel the way you do as well.

I'm sure we all would love a Byrd or Verner right now. I would really like to see the Rams grab a big name too but I feel that they may be outbid given where they rank in cap space. I voted 'No' but obviously hope 'yes'

byrd turned down a deal that would have made him the highest paid FS...i don't think money is the problem, he wants to play somewhere else

The Rams have added what I would consider a "premium free agent" in each of Fisher's two offseasons here, first with Finnegan then with Jake Long. So I voted yes.

Yea, wish they won't so that too young secondary gets torched on third and long again all year.

Do you even understand the value of VETERANS? DP you not see the cap is going up ANOTHER #27 million over two years?

They are not in danger of losing anyone they don't want to for years due to the cap.

TEAMS ARE GONNA SPEND MONEY, and make themselves better.

Depending 100% on the draft is idiotic, and you won't win it all with a whole team of your own draft picks anymore

If you don't use every avenue to get better, you won't.

Sometimes the guy you have to get is a top FA, like Jake Long or J. Byrd, who somehow become available.

Imagine if Green Bay had passed on Reggie WHite.

I wonder if some here were upset when the Rams dealt for and paid the best of any RB, a guy named Faulk.

Barry you're so angry. Try cutting back on the caffeine and adding a little fiber to the diet. People disagree with you and you get angry and throw around insults. Not really going to win people to your side of the discussion.

Nobody is saying we shouldn't sign any free agents. Nobody is saying you can only win if you just build through the draft. If you look at the last three winners of the Super Bowl each of them was around 5-7 starters acquired through free agency. We all know you can't fill every hole on your roster via the draft every year. We all know you can't fill every hole on your roster via free agency. You have to do both.

Personally the rams have $6 million in dead money already. Some of the cuts people around here are anticipating will add another 6 million. There's about 8% of your cap gone and unusable. We have some very good first round picks that will be coming up on 2nd contracts. Raises for Quinn and Brockers and even Sam Bradford are right around the corner. Then after them we have back to back years with first round picks. Just on those seven guys that's a lot of big money going to be devoted to second year contracts. If we start signing some big money free agents they better all hit or we're going to have to lose some of those young guys.

Personally I'd add Michael Jenkins at FS. He'll cost about a third of what Byrd will and he has played in Greg Williams system and was a great fit for it. Adding guard Jon Asamoah will take about half the money that Saffold is rumored to be signing for and having missed only four games in four years is much more reliable than Saffold or a lot of the other OLine options in FA.

Lighten up man free agency hasn't even started yet and you sound like you're about to bust a vessel. It's a long off season you might want to pace yourself.

I doubt Bradford gets a raise, he's already overpaid as he is.

I have a ton of faith in the groceries Snead/Fisher have been picking up. Whether it be via the draft or free agency.

    Premier FA? Doubtful.

When Sam Shields resigned, the dollar figure shocked a few people. $15 million the first year? Ouch.
Verner will expect at least $10 million per. Jets just cut Cromartie which generated $9.5 million in cap space. Easy for them to add a little and lock in Verner.

Re: Will the Rams add a premium Free Agent this offseason?

This guy on TST did a nice fan post about this very subject. I don't know who he is and I don't participate on that board other than to browse.
Basically my point is that Free Agency should be used as a low-cost option of fixing the holes on the roster. Yes St. Louis may still not be deemed an ideal place to go, so there may be some overpaying needed, but we are hardly Cleveland...sorry any Browns fans that may read this.

So while signing a big-name free agent might seem like an attractive option, it may not be the best option,
I feel that the Rams should sign some low cost free agents to fill some holes and give the front office some draft flexibility. We should not feel like we have to draft player x or we will have nothing at that spot. We should not have to jump up or pull the trigger early on any position because we feel as though we need someone at that position. Let the draft board fall as it may, and pick the best player available that can help the team.
