(CNN) -- Anna Nicole Smith died Thursday at a South Florida hospital after being discovered unconscious in her hotel room.

The reality TV star and former model was 39.

"I can confirm that she is deceased. It's as shocking to me as to you guys," Smith's attorney, Ronald Rale, told Reuters. "I don't know anything further. [Her lawyer and husband] Howard [K. Stern], obviously, is speechless and grieving."

Smith's private nurse called Seminole Hard Rock Hotel workers at 1:38 p.m. and security went to the room, Seminole Police Chief Charlie Tiger told reporters.

Before rescue worked arrived, Smith's bodyguard performed CPR on her, he said.

She was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood at 2:10 p.m. where she died, Tiger said. (Watch how Smith's death leaves daughter's fate undecided Video)

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday, according to the Broward County Medical Examiner's Office.
Smith's legal woes

Smith was involved in a paternity suit regarding the parentage of her daughter, Danielynn, as well as other disputes, including some regarding a house she stayed at in the Bahamas around the time she gave birth.

Earlier this week, Smith was included in a class-action lawsuit against a company, TrimSpa, for which she had worked as a spokesperson. TrimSpa makes a product it claims leads to substantial weight loss. The lawsuit alleges the marketing of the product, TrimSpa X32, was false or misleading. (Full story)

Smith's son, Daniel Wayne Smith, died at age 20 just days after the birth of Smith's daughter.

Pathologist Cyril Wecht said a lethal dose of methadone and antidepressants caused cardiac dysrhythmia, leading to his death.

In June 1994, the then-26-year-old Smith married Texas oil baron J. Howard Marshall II, 89, who had an estate valued at $1.6 billion.

He died the following year, and Smith waged a 12-year feud with Marshall's son, Pierce Marshall, over the inheritance.

She initially won a $474 million judgment, but that was scrapped when a Texas state court ruled that Pierce Marshall was the sole heir.

In May 2006, however, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Smith could pursue her fight in federal court. Pierce Marshall, 67, died in June.

She must have gone through SO MUCH. She finds out her son died after she is about to give birth, I believe 3 days after her baby's arrival. There is no way she couldn't have been messed up the rest of her life. I feel so sorry for her although she did some things that many hated her for, the stuff she went through was just terrible. RIP

If my youngest daughter were alive, she would be deeply saddened by the death of Anna Nichole. My daughter admired Smith for not letting the tragedies in life keep her down.

Unfortunately, custody is going to be quite hell. I hear the mother had a bad relationship with Anna and she is going to sue for some reason or other. The father is going to sue, bla bla. There is just going to be a lot of hell over the poor infant who is now motherless. It is very tragic especially for the baby, but what kills me is that the news and the paparazzi have footage of them putting Anna's body in the morgue all on TV. It's disgusting that people want to be that far into someone else's business. She had to deal with a lot of stuff, and I truly feel sorry for her. I really hope (especially for the baby's sake) that everything works out with the custody trial(s) that'll be coming up (they're just inevitable, unfortunately.). Hopefully this'll all pass soon and fortunately for the baby she won't remember any of this stuff that is going on...Godbless that child

I am sorry, but I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone that over-doses on drugs. I feel bad for the little one that had nothing to do with her mothers personal life. But Anna was hardly a role model for anyone.

Perhaps a blessing in disguise, hopefully for the kid at least. It is sad to see anyone die even if it is their own fault. That life couldn't have been really easy though, even before she became famous. Even though she did drugs, I still feel sorry for her because of the fact that she lost her son 3 days after giving birth. The postpartum is hell so I've heard from Tom Cruise . So, I feel bad for her, and I hope her child will be alright, I heard she did drugs while pregnant :x

Oh no, a gold digging, drug using, way too famous, tramp died. I'm sorry, but the world is better off without seeing her all over TV. She is the farthest thing from a role model I'd ever want for my kids.

Her child is better off too (just look at the wrecks her other kids turned out to be) and hopefully can get placed with suitable parents soon.
