Which Was The Best And Why...Star Trek Movies
I saw that another Star Trek movie is in the works...see information below.
Which Star Trek movie do you think is the best?
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan
Star Trek III: The Search For Spock
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home
Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: First Contact
Star Trek: Insurrection
Star Trek: Nemesis
BREAKING NEWS: J.J. Abrams to Produce "Trek XI"
J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and possibly direct the next Star Trek feature, according to today's Daily Variety and sources at Paramount Pictures. There is no title as yet for the new movie, but it will be the eleventh in the franchise. (Until a title is selected, we will usually refer to the project as simply "Star Trek XI.")
Although there isn't an official Paramount press release announcing the movie, it is a confirmed project under development with a 2008 release date targeted. Word about the Abrams project surfaced this morning (April 21) in the daily trade paper. He will be writing the script with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who penned "M:i:III." STARTREK.COM will keep you up to date on all official statements as they are released.
According to Variety, the proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.

Re: Which Was The Best And Why...Star Trek Movies
I've got to go with #2, Wrath of Khan. #1 had too much of a dull "2001" feel to it, and was pretty light on plot.
#2 was more like the rollicking good time that the TV series sometimes provided. The cast had fun, they were not trying to make it more than what it was. Later ones (Particularly the "Save the Whales" entry, and especially the one where Kirk has a dramatic adversarial monologue to "God" and wins! [a more realistic entry would have him planted on the side of a mountain getting his liver pecked out by a hawk every night]) were more like a caricature of the old series.
Anything based on TNG is not worthy of consideration for reasons to lengthy to go into here. I have not seen any of the other series, though "Enterprise" does sound intriguing.

Re: Which Was The Best And Why...Star Trek Movies
Enterprise sucked....the producers dug its grave.
To me, STII:TWOK was the best. Sure, the humor of the original series was lacking, but the story was good, except for the fact that Chekov was not a member of the crew when "Space Seed" (the episode the movie was based on) was filmed, yet Khan "never forgets a face" and recognizes him...
The battle scenes were realistic, the crew interaction was believeable, and the technology was understandable.
The most emotional scene of all was watching the photon torpedo casing/coffin being slowly launched while Scotty played "Amazing Grace" on the bagpipes. (I swear that this is the only song that sounds good on the pipes.)
If you watch very closely at the very end, while the camera is panning the scenery on the Genesis planet, you can make out a very tall humanoid shadow right before Spock's monologue..
But...I also like the line "Double dumbass on you!"

Without Star Trek, Star Wars and Battlestar Gallactica, there would have been no Spaceballs. Then, nobody would have been warned about the dangers of space herpes.
