Re: Do You Give Money To People By The Road With Cardboard Signs?

If an illegal immigrant can find a job to provide for him and his, so can the "help me ... God bless you" sign recyclers ...

"Yo bro ... can you spare me your sign? I have no mouth, yet I must scream ..."

Re: Do You Give Money To People By The Road With Cardboard Signs?

I live in Austin,TX and there are numerous homeless people with their signs at evey intersection. Sometimes, I pick up a box of granola bars and give those out. I'm not one to part with my hard earned dollars.

But, on one particular occasion I had to give the guy a buck just based on orginallity. He was holding a sign that said "Family killed by ninjas! Saving up for Karate lessons.." Man, I thought that was just too funny.

I have given food before, but I can't help feeling insulted when a person is expecting me to give them money. I mean I know there are opportunities. I see help wanted signs all over the place at unskilled jobs. If I lived in a developing country or during the Great Depression or something, that'd be one thing, but I've spent most of my life living in the U.S. The other side of this is that I'm taking on loans to get through my education, so I don't generally feel like I've got the extra funds to spare until I'm back out of debt.

The ones I see are always hanging out by a liquer store, and I tell them "Dude get a little smarter" dont ask for food at a liquer store it dont work with me.

I had a little old lady that needed money to see a doctor for a burn on her arm.Standing in the Rain obviously in Pain. She needed exactly $9.50 For her co-Payment.I probably would have given her the money but all I had was $100 bill.but man shes got some sort of insurance probably on welfare.Man I really didnt buy the story. The Gov. gives those people so much they dont need to work and have no incentive to work.

It hurts to not really know who really needs the help.

I would gladly help if it wasnt so...well convoluted for the lack of a better word. The con artist are hurting the poor so badly that your just afraid to give up your hard earned money to anybody and it stinks.

I had to give to the one guy I saw in SF with a sign that read:

Hey, I could lie to you, but I just want to buy a beer...
    This space for rent...

Ya that sign is getting very common lately and I do appreciate the honesty, but I'm still not gonna give them any of my beer money.

Re: Do You Give Money To People By The Road With Cardboard Signs?

I do give money at times and I do this in good faith and hope that they use the money to help themselves and their children. I work way too hard for my money and I know that anyone at any time can get a job if they put in the effort.

I have a very supportive family that has a foundation and I know that if I ever fell upon hard times, I would be taken care of. I'm one of the fortunate ones, not all are like me.

It depends on what sort of mood I'm in, but it's a rarity. Typically I just tip well for waiters/waitresses and try to make life a little easier for those working very hard and long hours but get nothing but complaints thrown their way.
