Find the Pit Bull
Can you tell which of the following dogs is a real Pit Bull Terrier? Hint - in the "Clan Pets" area of the gallery, there is a picture of my dog, Maggie, who is a Pit that looks very similar...

Re: Find the Pit Bull
I believe its #7, though there are certainly a number of breeds (such as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier) that look very similar.

Yea, I'm going to say 7.

Re: Find the Pit Bull
#16 is the pit, but it does not look very dangerous.
I think my dog may be a Catahoula hound mix, but there is no way to know for him since he was found on the side of the road. The organization told me he was part pit and his personality seems to fit the description of a pit so I think it is possible.
Pits are misunderstood, but lets not make them out to be without flaws.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Re: Find the Pit Bull
I'm sure there are pit bulls that are raised in a way that renders them non-aggressive.
Nonetheless, I'd never get one. I'm of the opinion that the most dangerous animal living in my house should be me.

Re: Find the Pit Bull
I disagree. I don't think you can take away natural traits that they were breed for. I think that good owners socialize them properly and control their environment, but I don't think you can render them non-aggressive. Some are born with non-aggressive personalities and are complete sweethearts. Some have aggressive traits.

My kennel lady takes the time to introduce him to the other dogs and he gets to play with about 70% of the other dogs at camp and he plays nice. He is good with my other dog and he is great with kids.
Do I trust him? Absolutely in a controlled environment. He is very predictable and controllable. He is actually very submissive and he wants to please.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Re: Find the Pit Bull
Well, I don't have any first hand experience with pit bulls, so I was being generous in my assessment. If you are correct, and the aggressiveness is innate, then I'm surprised anybody would want to own one.

Re: Find the Pit Bull
They are aggressive towards other dogs, not people. They were always bred to be nice and obedient to their handlers.
I can't say that I would pick a pit or a pit mix if I get another dog, but I have one now and he has a lot of good qualities. I think it is important to understand them. They are not the right dog for every person who wants to own a dog.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]
