Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
It seems that you can't turn on a TV in the last week without seeing a promo or a report on illusionist David Blaine's latest stunt - living in a water-filled sphere for a week as a prelude to a stunt in which he'll try to hold his breath for nine minutes.
Indeed, though this is hardly original - we've seen many "bubble boys," from John Travolta to George's Costanza's Trivial Pursuit nemesis - its certainly getting more notice than it deserves.
This is just what David Blaine wants, but is it what he needs?
I'd say we're observing is an extreme form of psychosis. Think about it. When you were a kid and you didn't get the attention you wanted, what did you do? You probably pulled some stunt to get noticed and, if that didn't work, threatened to hold your breath until those around you made you the focus of attention.
Of course, most of us ultimately become secure in ourselves and do not need the constant validation of being the center of everyone's universe and, thus, cease these attention grabbing antics.
Not David Blaine. He, more so than anyone since Tom Greene, seems to be willing to do anything to get people to notice him.
Even if the stunts don't eventually hurt or even kill him, they're not healthy. And we, by paying attention, only perpetuate and exacerbate his psychosis.
So give him what he really needs by ignoring him. Maybe, one day, he'll learn to be happy being just a guy, and will stop trying to impress people by covering himself with bamboo shoots and living in the Giant Panda house at the National Zoo, or some other nonsense like that.Last edited by AvengerRam; -05-05-2006 at 12:20 PM.

Oh great....now he has a new show idea.covering himself with bamboo shoots and living in the Giant Panda house at the National Zoo"Before the gates of excellence the high gods have placed sweat; long is the road thereto and rough and steep at first; but when the heights are reached, then there is ease, though grievously hard in the winning." --- Hesiod

I don't know, Av, I think I'd really like to see this...especially if he takes Dr. Phil into the tak with him.

Re: Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
I just think the stunt lacks a certain something.
Now, if they put fake plastic snowflakes in the sphere with him and shook it up periodically, that would be interesting (Note: kind of like what happened to Kyle in the David Blaine episode of South Park!)

Re: Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
Well, from what I've read, apparently Blaine failed in his effort to break the record.
So... what was the point of his stunt again?
Oh yeah... a pitiful cry for attention.
Well then, mission accomplished.

Cry for attention...hummmm interesting!!!
I thought the stunt and the person is pretty entertaining. As far as attention seeking, isn't every entertainer?
Two thumbs up from me.

Re: Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
I suppose, but its one thing to seek attention by exhibiting a talent (real acting, playing an instrument, singing, dancing, comedy). Its another thing to seek attention by doing idiotic and pointless stunts.

Re: Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
Hmm. Two hours to watch him not break the record? Can you say Geraldo Rivera and Al Capone's vault?

Re: Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
Can we include this thread in with the Nostrodamus one? Just kidding Nostrodamus has a lot more credibility than David Blaine for real.

Re: Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
I predict that I will hate the taco bell commercials that says "I'm Full" once again. Does that make me a Blaine/Nostrodamus wannabe?

Re: Give David Blaine What He Really Needs
Did anyone else see all those Baby Ruth candy bars floating near the top of the sphere? Were we supposed to believe that he could eat them ALL?
If this did not make sense, rent "Caddyshack". Classic.[SIGPIC]http://www.stickershoppe.com/mm5/graphics/00000001/MLRPANCmini.jpg[/SIGPIC]This is for Randy! GO BRM!
