Of Kayak racing and some wisdom from aZENgerRam.

I wear many hats in my life, but the one that I look forward to wearing the most is one that I bought through the L.L. Bean catalogue. Its a outdoor/hiking hat that I wear every Saturday when I go kayaking on the Wekiva River here in Central Florida.

Recently, I received a flyer announcing that there was to be a kayak race on a portion of the river that I frequent. My reaction...? If anything ever missed the point of kayaking, its a "kayak race."

You see, when I go out on the river, the last thing I'm thinking of is competition. My career is about competition. When I play basketball in a 40 and over league on Thursday nights, that involves competition.

Kayaking, on the other hand, is a Zen activity. Its about being one with nature, and enjoying the contemplative thoughts that only come in quiet solitude.

I think everyone should have something in their life like that - an activity that is not about winning or losing, but rather is about just being.

    Wow.

    That was almost deep.

I hear you Av. My brother has a couple of kayaks and I often go out with him to the lakes north of Phoenix with the intention of getting away and clearing my mind. He's an absolute kayaking fanatic, so if he comes to this years bash, you guys will have to talk about the latest hats, quick dry shirts and paddle types.

    Kayak racing?
To me smells a lot like self survival. IMO

Okay... I have no idea what you're trying to say there.

I have to challenge you AvengerRam regarding kayaking in the Florida swamps as opposed to the raging rivers of California. Ever shoot the rapids of the Upper American River or the North Fork of the Mokelumne? Ever bounce your helmet off granite rocks in under tows or fly over boulders and launch into the air 30 feet? I need to bring your ass out here to do some REAL kayaking brother!
Check out my action in this video

I guess you'd have to have a serious Zen attitude to make it down the Mokolumne.

It looks a lot worse from the shore than it is in the river itself (Although it does get crazy at the end of the run as you can see. By the way, I'm in the blue kayak). It is a blast man. I love tubing or Kayaking rivers. Don't care much for rafting with a bunch of people. I prefer tackling the rivers alone.

There is no real whitewater in Florida, but two weeks ago I did paddle through an area that was infested by 8-10 foot gators.

I've done a bit of whitewater rafting, and also took a whitewater canoe trip in Tennessee once.

I'd love to take you up on the offer one day, BRM. After all, kayakers (like Scotts and the Irish) know that REAL MEN WEAR SKIRTS!

A bad fresh water experience that I don't wish to talk about. Bye the way, river rafts can and do sink. FYI
