Given the 100 or fewer songs playlist of most commercial radio stations, its hard to find good new music.

So, I thought I'd start a Grass Roots music recommendation thread.

1. List only music that's relatively new (came out in the last year or so) - don't tell us that you just started listening to Hotel California by the Eagles, even if you just found that album.

2. Give a description of the type or genre of music, and why you like it.

I'll start:

Aimee Mann - The Forgotten Arm
Singer/Songwriter in the genre of others like Natalie Merchant and Sarah McLachlin. Great start to finish album that's mellow, but not depressing.

Dar Williams - My Better Self
Contemporary Folk, Singer/Songwriter. Not as "folky" as some of her earlier work (which I like very much too). Lots of acustic guitar and great vocals. Standout cover of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb with Ani Defranco providing back-up vocals.

Calexico/Iron and Wine - In the Reins
Two bands collaberating on seven song EP. If you liked Iron and Wine's "From Great Heights" and the rest of the Empire State Soundtrack, this is an album you'll want to give a listen to.
