Nova vs. Belly Lox
Which lox do you prefer, nova or belly? My gut tells me that only me and the avenger are going to have a response on this one, but i never underestimate the wide range of experiences of this group.
Besides, i cant really participate in all this terrific gravy related debate since i dont eat it, but i am highly conversant in smoked fish of all types.

Re: Nova vs. Belly Lox
Nova is my preference of the two, though my favorite is whitefish.

Re: Nova vs. Belly Lox
I prefer nova also, but if you throw a slice or two of belly onto your bagel with nova its a real kick. Try eating a quarter of a pound of belly in one sitting like sashimi. Its even saltier than anchovies.
I like whitefish, but sturgeon rules!

Re: Nova vs. Belly Lox
I really do like some fish, but not smoked fish, not fishy oily fish, and you can keep the herring too. I do like Salmon, and smoked salmon is tolerable, but I would not choose it.
It was very funny to go out to a fancy restaurant with our Stockholm office. I tried lots of the fish and I was polite, but it really is nasty stuff I tell you. I don't understand the love of fish that the europeens have.
Bring me another snapps please. I need to kill my taste buds.

Love fish, but what on Earth is Lox? I'm presuming it's a short form?

I think lox is a term used for smoked salmon, but I don't know why the word was created.

Re: Nova vs. Belly Lox
Lox is a generic term that refers to smoked salmon, but it is not the same thing as scottish smoked salmon. It comes typically from the chinook salmon or from the waters off nova scotia. Most accurately, its really jewish smoked salmon. It has a different taste than scottish smoked salmon, which is the much more common variety. Lox comes in two basic forms, nova and belly. Belly (named for the part of the fish it comes from) is very very very salty, unlike anything you have ever had. Nova is smooth like salmon sashimi. Good nova is one of the great joys in my life. Finding it outside of new york city is often a major challenge. Bad nova is just lousy and can be very oily.

Re: Nova vs. Belly Lox
Nova lox for me.
Also, I like my knishes with yellow mustard, from a roadside vendor.
I never quite understood the matzo thing, I must admit.
Do Jews still tend to look down on Nabisco products, as they used to use lard in almost everything except Triscuits? (They since have moved to vegetable oil). Do you regret the Keebler buyout of Sunshine, and the resulting discontinuation of the Hydrox brand Cookie (the original sandwich cookie) that seemed to be preferred by northeastern Jews?

Re: Nova vs. Belly Lox
I designate no religious affiliation cookie wise. i was always an oreo rather than a hydrox guy, independent of any buyout in this area. My biggest concern about the keebler buyout was the resulting unemployment of all the little elves in the hollow tree.

Uh, those crafty elves did the buying. It's the fat guy with the chef's hat that's out of the cookie business. He is now relegated to Cheez-its and "Krispy" crackers.
