First, my greatest wearing #5 would be George Brett. HOF and a friend....
I'll have to think about the rest. I'll get back with ya on this.

Rams players listed I agree with. :r

Now if number '00' is being considered, my sure vote would go for Jim Otto, the great Raiders center of 15 yrs. and NFL HOF. Made that number unique and famous among black & silver fans.

Sorry, RFRH.

Re: SI's greatest players to wear the #'s 00-99

I agree with most of them, and as far as #99, anybody but Warren Sapp. Personally, I would recommend Charlie Sheen(Major League).

Well, who would be a better #45? I can't think of one. Pedro has career era under 3.0 and a winning percentage over .600. The guy is a first ballot Hall of Famer. I just don't see any east coast bias here. Please, if you know of a more deserving #45 let me know.

Bob Gibson ?

He was the reason why the mound was lowered. 1.12 ERA in 1968, the lowest since 1914, and one of the greatest postseason performers of his day.

Totally agree! BG, a one of a kind 45.

I still remember how much I enjoyed seeing him play for the Cardinals even though I've never been a 'real' MLB fan (but always root for the Dodgers). Gibson was a serious pro and IMHO, far better than Pedro Martinez.

I have to say that you got me there and that Bob Gibson would be ahead of Pedro. And my apologies to the great Gibson for forgetting that he wore #45. Still not sure if I agree with the east coast bias. Plus you still have to give props to Pedro to have a career era as low as he does with a mound that was lowered to help hitters. Plus the prime of his career was played in the AL where there was the DH. If he would have played those years with an NL club his era would be even lower. I'll say Gibson is ahead of Pedro, but not by much.

Re: SI's greatest players to wear the #'s 00-99

Pedro's worthy of the number, but if my team is in a Game 7 of the league championship series or World Series, Gibson is the man I would want to give the ball to.

I'm not a hockey fan, but it's without a doubt Wayne Gretzky.

Re: SI's greatest players to wear the #'s 00-99

Gibson, Seaver and Carlton were all better than pedro. Pedro has had an excellent career, but hardly at the level of a gibson, seaver, carlton, clemens or maddux.

Odd discussion on a rams related thread.
