The teacher who slept with the 14 year old studen

well, even though its the regular season, a minor diversion from football.

What is the appropriate legal penalty for the 23 year old teacher who had repeated sexual encounters with her 14 year old student. By the way, the teacher was a hot blond woman and the student was a boy.

The teacher went to jail for a short time and is now out. If it was a male teacher and a female student, i think we all know that the cell would be locked and the key tossed away.

Is the double standard appropriate in our modern day society?

GC, double standard is a huge understatement and it's most definitely NOT appropriate. Apparently, the kid is mentally messed up and having problems as a result of the whole situation.

A guy does this and he's not only sent away for a an eternity, he's villified as the devil himself. This chick does it, spends some token time in jail and all anyone can say is how lucky the 14 year old was.

Yeah, after a short period of time locked up, she'll probably do photo spreads in Maxim and Penthouse, earning more money than she would have in 20 years as a teacher.

Actually AV, as you well know from your numerous forrays into the practice of criminal law, she is prohibited under florida law from making any money off her celebrity. The tv show my wife saw the other night addressed that exact point. SHe is working as a cashier, she has turned down many offers to pose since she they cant advertise who she is or she cant keep any of the money.

Actually, I've avoided criminal law like the plague throughout my practice.

I think she could profit indirectly from her notoriety, but you are right that the so-called "Gacy law" might make it very difficult.

And you're a better man for it. I understand our criminal system (the best in the world) creates a need for the criminal defense practice. I'm glad we have them. That's on the record.

However, off the record, I can think of more than a few defense attorneys I'd like to smash in the face with the scales of justice.

I will say that I dreamed about what the young man "went through" when I was a teenager. call me a pervert...guilty as charged.

There is a complete double standard. I think that whatever a pedophile male would get should be exactly what a female pedophile deserves as well. I am sick of the double standard. Even in the military I have seen females get off lightly for fraternization or adultery while males got much more harsh punishment. Double standards seem to be the rule now.

I saw in a news report that her lawyer (apparently successfully) argued that she is - AND I QUOTE - "too pretty for jail." That's freakin' ridiculous! Is that even possible?

Therein lies the problem. With her looks she is able to get away with it pretty much with a slap on the wrist. If she were average or butt-ugly then she would probably be put away for some time. Ridiculous...

It's a question of maturity, exploitation and culture. I've seen quite a few examples of people who shouldn't have sex at any age - their offspring comprise a who's who on the police reports throughout the country - their procreation should be a crime also.

Gypsies and African tribes marry their children off early. Ignorance or cultural arrogance? There is a double standard. I'm just not sure penalties for informed consent is the answer ...

If this is true, I guess I will turn to a life of crime with no fear of going to jail even if caught. :)
