The Shootist - John Wayne's goodbye to Hollywood, and to his fans. Ron Howard did a good job as a kid who didn't understand as much as he thought he did.
Seeing John Wayne playing an aging gunfighter dying of cancer, I wonder how much of the pain he portrayed was real, and how much was acting. He was hospitalized for two weeks during filming, and a lot of people thought the movie would never be finished. I think it was better than any of his other movies...like he wanted his final performance to be his finest.
In second place - Blazing Saddles. Not really a western, but still funny as heck.
Honorable mentions - The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly; True Grit; Tombstone.
Have to admit those are very good, and a lot of others also.Unlike some of the newer ones,I dont see Kevin Costner as a Cowboy.I did like Emilio Esteves as billy the kid.Bonanza had to be My favorite Tv western.Close seconds Gunsmoke and The Rifleman.Quote:

No doubt about it, when you think Western, you have to think John Wayne. "True Grit" and "The Cowboys" are two of my favorites.
'Unforgiven' or maybe 'High plains drifter'. Also think 'Deadwood' was a great series, although a bit fierce at times.
I love "Deadwood", but must admit I don't have a clue what's going on half the time with the story line.Quote:
