Honestly, I'd go with the X-Box. I was a huge advocate for PS2 for a while, but I think at this point, the X-Box library of games has just about evened out, and the graphics on the X-Box are superior. Plus, Halo 2 is AMAZING and is exclusive to the X-Box and PC. It pays for my X-Box Live membership alone.

Although at this point, you're going to want to get it as cheap as possible. The next gen consoles will be coming out in the next year or so, I'd imagine. Might just want to save your money for one of those.

You have to ask yourself which of the systems best reflects innovation inspite of conglomeration. XBox is Microsoft's intrusion into the game industry while trying to exploit its monopolization of software development. PS2 is Sony's incursion into the digital advances of the entertainment industry.

MS wants to capture on-line gaming while Sony wants to exploit its library of music and video files. Allowing MS to buy up imaginative software programs and then resell the product as some innovation has proven to be a drag on software development. On the other hand, Sony's acquisition of programming and recording and movie libraries has not dampened artistic results.

If you want to encourage MS to attempt to stretch its tenacles into every electronic medium then buy an XBOX. If you think that nothing better can come from MS's insinuation into the gaming industry then you might go with a PS2. If you got to this point in the response you might regret having asked the question.
