    SaberCats top Rattlers to win ArenaBowl

    PHOENIX -- Mark Grieb set a record with eight touchdown passes, James Roe caught five to tie three more records and the San Jose SaberCats beat the Arizona Rattlers 69-62 Sunday for their second ArenaBowl title in three years.

    After nearly an hour of unrelenting offense, the final minute of the Arena Football League championship turned on defense.

    Arizona scored with 31 seconds left to get within 63-62, but coach Danny White opted for a 2-point conversion. Sherdrick Bonner rolled left and passed low to Hunkie Cooper, but San Jose's Omarr Smith broke up the pass.

    Then San Jose guard Chuck Reed took the ensuing onside kick, lumbering 7 yards to score with 30 seconds remaining.

    But Dan Frantz missed the point-after, leaving Arizona within seven points.

    As time ticked off, Bonner found Orshawante Bryant for three first downs - the last a 15-yard catch setting up the Rattlers on the San Jose 2 with two seconds left. Rashied Davis smothered Hunkie Cooper on Arizona's final play, knocking down Bonner's pass as the clock expired.

    San Jose's 2002 championship win came in a 52-14 rout of the rival Rattlers for the most lopsided win in ArenaBowl history. The victory snapped Arizona's 10-game winning streak, which included two regular-season wins over the SaberCats last month to steal the No. 1 playoff seed.

    It also halted a three-game string of losses to Arizona, which knocked San Jose out of last year's playoffs.

    Grieb eclipsed the seven TD passes thrown by Albany's Mike Pawlawski in 1999 and Grand Rapids' Clint Dolezel in 2001.

    Aside from Roe, Grieb hit Fred Coleman for 22- and 2-yard scores, James Hundon had a 33-yard scoring reception and Barry Wagner ran for a TD.

    Bonner set a record with 367 yards passing (Pawlawski, 327), and tossed seven TD passes - four to Siaha Burley and three to Bryant three.

    Cooper and Bo Kelly each rushed for a Rattlers TD.

    Roe's scoring grabs went for 8, 11, 3, 38 and 31 yards. Terrill Shaw of Grand Rapids set the records for scoring (30 points), TDs (five) and TD receptions against Nashville in 2001.

    Roe had four in the first half, and the threat he posed opened up Hundon and Coleman for go-ahead scores in the fourth quarter, breaking 49-49 and 56-56 ties, respectively.

    After Coleman's 2-yard catch made it 63-56 with 3:44 left, Burley returned the kickoff 21 yards to the 17 and capped a short drive with a 9-yard TD reception. But San Jose kept a one-point lead by stopping the two-point try.

    Roe's fourth score was a momentum-changer on a play that began with two seconds left in the second quarter and the score tied at 28.

    Roe caught the ball at midfield and weaved through arm tackles by Kelvin Hunter and Randy Gatewood to the end zone.

    Bonner tied the ArenaBowl record by completing his first six passes, and the Rattlers scored twice in their first three plays - with Burley catching a 29-yard TD pass and Bryant a 33-yarder - to take a 14-7 lead.

    But the SaberCats used a fourth-down sack by Sam Hernandez - the sixth in 14 playoff games for the AFL's career sack leader - to set up Roe's 11-yard scoring grab and get the lead for the first time at 21-14 in the second quarter.

    It was an awesome game and went right up to the end. Congrats to the Sabercats. The Rattlers played a tough game and should be commended, but they've been there before and have to be feeling bad.

      TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Bruce Gradkowski threw for 186 yards and three touchdowns to lead Toledo to a 38-15 win over Buffalo on Saturday night.

      Quinton Broussard and Trinity Dawson both rushed for 119 yards for the Rockets (6-1, 4-0 Mid-American Conference). Broussard also had a 10-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

      Buffalo's Drew Willy completed 18 of 31 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception and was sacked four times.

      Willy found Chad Upshaw for a 6-yard TD pass and Andrae Smith sacked Gradkowski in the end zone to record a safety to help the Bulls take a 12-10 lead in the second quarter.

      The Rockets bounced back right before halftime. Gradkowski finished off a 5-play, 67-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass to Steve Odom to make it 17-12 Toledo with 44 seconds remaining in the quarter.

      Gradkowski tossed a 70-yard TD pass to Andrew Hawkins in the third to give the Rockets a 24-12 lead.

      Gerr McGroarty kicked two field goals for Buffalo (0-7, 0-4), which had three turnovers.

      Richard Davis finished off the scoring with a 7-yard scoring run with 28 seconds left in the game for Toledo, which tied a school record with its 17th straight home victory.

      The Rockets also won 17 straight from 1999-2002 and 1969-71. Toledo is 34-1 in its last 35 games at the Glass Bowl.

      Buffalo's Steven King also had 22 carries for 67 yards.

      SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- There was nothing wrong with the St. Louis Rams' offense
      that a trip to San Francisco couldn't fix.

      Marc Bulger passed for 186 yards, Marshall Faulk rushed for 121 more and St.
      Louis sent the woeful ***** to their first 0-4 start in 25 years with a 24-14
      victory on Sunday night.

      Isaac Bruce had seven catches for 100 yards as the Rams (2-2) got their
      ninth victory in 11 games against their longtime rivals. This one was out of
      reach early: St. Louis built a 24-0 halftime lead, and the sellout crowd booed
      San Francisco off the field while heading for the exits.

      Shaun McDonald caught a touchdown pass and Joey Goodspeed and Steven Jackson
      had 2-yard scoring runs for the Rams, who met little resistance while scoring
      on all four of their first-half drives.

      The Rams rushed for just 108 yards in their previous two games, both losses
      to teams that missed last season's playoffs. Coach Mike Martz was criticized
      for failing to maintain a balance in his pass-heavy schemes.

      But during four sophisticated drives consuming more than 20 minutes, Martz
      called 19 running plays and 18 passes in the first half. Running the ball was
      easy and fun for Faulk, who had his fifth 100-yard rushing game against the
      ***** -- but so was passing, catching, blocking and tackling.

      Tim Rattay, who missed the *****' previous two games with a separated
      shoulder, was 31-of-47 for 299 yards and two touchdowns, while tight end Eric
      Johnson had career highs of 10 catches for 113 yards.

      But despite three lengthy fourth-quarter drives, the ***** are winless after
      four games for the first time since 1979, the year Bill Walsh took over the
      franchise and led its transformation into a five-time Super Bowl champion.

      Last week, the ***** were shut out for the first time since 1977 in a 34-0
      loss to Seattle. After three more scoreless quarters against the Rams, they
      avoided another goose egg on Curtis Conway's 9-yard TD catch with 13:33 to play.

      Rattay, who passed for 134 yards in the fourth period, added an 18-yard TD
      pass to rookie Rashaun Woods with 16 seconds left.

      The ***** were an NFL-worst minus-7 in turnover differential entering the
      game, and they quickly padded their lead with a fumble and an interception in
      the first 16 minutes.

      After St. Louis went 80 yards on its opening drive, Rattay lost the ball on
      a hit by Tommy Polley late in the first quarter. Leonard Little recovered at
      the San Francisco 11, setting up McDonald's short TD catch.

      LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Paul Pinegar threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter and later ran for another score, leading Fresno State to a 37-7 win over New Mexico State on Saturday night.

      The Bulldogs (3-1, 1-0 Western Athletic) built an early 17-0 lead and coasted the rest of the way on a soggy night, keeping the Aggies (0-6, 0-2) winless under first-year coach Hal Mumme.

      A steady rain began 10 minutes before kickoff and continued much of the night. A crowd of only 8,312 fans showed up, but many left at halftime when Fresno State led 20-7 and only a few hundred watched the second half.

      With the turf slippery, the Bulldogs relied on the legs of running backs Bryson Sumlin and Wendell Mathis, who each rushed for 105 yards, and the right foot of kicker Clint Stitser, who made three field goals.

      Pinegar added a 1-yard TD run on the first play of the fourth quarter. He finished with 112 yards passing, completing 10 of 19 passes.

      The Aggies managed only 195 total yards, including 105 on the ground, and for another week New Mexico State struggled.

      Fresno State's Emanuel Sanchez hit NMSU's Joey Vincent to force an early fumble that was recovered by Awan Diles, setting up the Bulldogs' first TD. Four plays later, Pinegar threw a TD pass to Adam Jennings.







      Pinegar added a 19-yard TD pass to Jaron Fairman with 13 seconds remaining in the first quarter. In between the scoring plays, Stitser made a 38-yard field goal.

      The Aggies trimmed the margin to 17-7 when Royal Gill threw a 3-yard TD pass to freshman A.J. Harris on a crossing pattern in the second period. That play capped a 10-play, 70-yard drive.

      But the Bulldogs led 20-7 after Stitser's 28-yard field goal just before halftime.

      Mathis added the final score, darting untouched into the end zone on a 6-yard run with 5:56 remaining.

      Bloomsburg, Pa - The Rock's sophomore tandem of Nate Crookshank and Paul Favers put up big numbers Saturday afternoon, but the effort did not result in victory.

      Crookshank completed 23 of 37 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns and Favers had seven receptions for 127 yards in The Rock's season-opening 40-24 loss at Bloomsburg.

      Favers also had 111 yards on four kickoff returns.

      Behind the leadership of Crookshank (who also threw two interceptions) and Favers, The Rock offense amassed 425 yards in total offense (114 rushing, 311 passing) and picked up 22 first downs.

      Conversely, though, The Rock defense allowed Bloomsburg 438 yards in total offense, including 250 yards and four TDs rushing by Jamar Brittingham.

      The loss was a frustrating one for The Rock as, in the words of Yogi Berra, it was deja vu all over again.

      For the third successive season, The Rock had Bloomsburg on the proverbial ropes but could not throw the knockout punch.

      The Rock lost a 19-16 decision to the Huskies in 2003 and dropped a 20-17 decision to Bloomsburg last fall. Both games were played on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium in Slippery Rock.

      Saturday's game started off well for The Rock.

      SRU held a 24-7 lead with 10:01 left to play in the third quarter after Crookshank hit Luke Wetzel in the back left corner of the end zone for a one-yard TD pass.

      In the ensuing six-plus minutes, though, Bloomsburg rolled up 141 yards in total offense and scored three TDs to take a 27-24 advantage.





      A pair of fourth-quarter TD runs by Brittingham padded the final margin.

      The Rock held the first lead, thanks to a 31-yard field goal by Ryan Daniel at the 8:17 mark of the first quarter.

      The boot capped a 15-play, 64-yard march by SRU after The Rock defense had stripped the ball from Brittingham at the SRU 24 yard line. Brandon Rakszawski forced the turnover and Akeem Etheridge pounced on the loose pigskin.

      Brittingam redeemed himself with a 28-yard TD run on Bloomsburg's ensuing possession to put the hosts on top, 6-3, with 3:23 left in the first period. The extra-point kick sailed wide to the right.

      SRU came right back to march 76 yards in 14 plays to regain the lead. Josh Kniess capped the drive with a two-yard TD run at the 12:34 mark of the second period.

      GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) Chris Leak threw three touchdown passes, DeShawn Wynn scored three times and No. 22 Florida rebounded from a home loss to LSU with a 52-16 victory against Middle Tennessee on Saturday.

      Leak, who was 15-of-33 for a season-low 142 yards in a 24-21 loss to the Tigers, completed 17 of 22 passes for 316 yards against the Blue Raiders (2-4).

      He was rarely pressured, giving him plenty of time to find open receivers. He had TD passes to O.J. Small, Andre Caldwell and Chad Jackson before sitting out the fourth quarter.

      Wynn ran for 81 yards, and Ciatrick Fason added 48 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

      Defensively, the Gators (4-2) gave up more yards than they wanted. But for the most part, they kept Middle Tennessee out of the end zone.

      Clint Marks, who completed 30 of 34 passes for 447 yards with four touchdowns last week against Arkansas State, was hurried all afternoon and threw two interceptions.

      The game went about like expected: a mismatch from the opening kickoff. It was supposed to be played as the season opener but was postponed six weeks because of Hurricane Frances.

      The Swamp was about half empty when the fourth quarter started. The game was considered a sellout even though there were thousands of empty seats. The reasons? The weak opponent, it was the fourth consecutive home game, it was an early start and the Gators already have two losses.

      Nonetheless, Florida was ready from the start.

      The Gators scored on their first four possessions and led 24-3. They also scored touchdowns on all three drives in the third quarter, opening up a 36-point lead.

      After forcing the Blue Raiders to punt to open the third, Leak found Jackson for a 33-yard touchdown that made it 38-13. It was the second one-play scoring drive of the game. Leak had a 62-yard TD pass to Caldwell early in the second quarter.

      Colby Smith hit his third field goal for Middle Tennessee to make it 38-16, but the Gators quickly answered.

      Leak hooked up with Dallas Baker for a 41-yard gain, and then Fason ran 20 yards on the next play to make it 45-16.

      But Leak wasn't done.

      Middle Tennessee - which fell to 0-8 against ranked opponents since joining Division I-A in 1999 - punted for the fifth time, and Leak quickly drove the Gators back down the field. Wynn capped the drive with a 9-yard score. He also has TD runs of 5 and 15 yards.

      The Gators were short-handed on defense, playing without two starters. Linebacker Channing Crowder and safety Jarvis Herring were suspended in July for the Middle Tennessee game after an alleged dispute with police. Reserve running back Skyler Thornton also was suspended for the game, but for another off-the-field...
