Report: UConn coach signs six-year contract

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Connecticut football coach Randy Edsall has signed a six-year contract that puts him at the top pay level of Big East coaches.

The deal, which was signed Friday, pays more than $900,000 a year, The Hartford Courant's Web site,, reported Wednesday, citing a source it did not identify.

Edsall, in his sixth season, is now earning about $200,000 a year.

His original contract in December 1998 called for Edsall to be paid in the "mid-range area" among Big East coaches when UConn joined the Big East. The Huskies became members of the Big East this year.

Edsall's salary boost is substantially more than "mid-range area" among Big East coaches. A sampling of present Big East members shows football coaches making an average of about $500,000 a year, the newspaper reported.

Edsall is 25-33 in six seasons. But he led the team to a 9-3 record last season and a 1-0 start this season.

Edsall's telephone number is not listed and a call by The Associated Press to UConn Athletic Director Jeffrey Hathaway was not immediately returned.
